Bullet101
Title says it all really, how do repair cracked or broken in half canopies and get them looking almost as goo as they where? TIA
MaRiO FDZ
hmmm I'd say you're screw*d... If it's cracked from the inside (or broken in half in the worst case scenario) Remember that Sanding only covers the surface, so anything in the "middle" of the canopy is unreachable.... The solution would be to re-cast the canopy, but like... DUH nearly impossible... What canopy are we talking about??? Take Care
EF
I'm affraid there is no way to repair those pieces. Two options: Ask for a replacement part or use the broken part as master to make a copy. What kit is it?
Bullet101
I guess i'm buggered then, i broke my AMT B-52 canopy in half. :)
EF
Another option is to replace only the flat window panels with clear plastic from CD cases. That's the same thing I do for all my large scratchbuilt or vacuform projects. :)
EF
Here's an example, on a 1/72 vac VC-10: well I still need to polish that canopy.
Bullet101
Hmm i'll give that some thought, cheers mate.
wildweasel
IMHO maybe you can try Elmer's white glue, it dries clear & it might cover the cracked area, then dip it to Future. Hope this will help.
JulesAustralia
Or, you can just bite the bullet and tint the thing really darkly... which, on a B52 is a shame if youve done nice work on the pit....
Alistair
I had a canopy breakage on my 1/48 Eduard bell X-1 i was dubious that i would receive a spare part because i live in the Uk. I tried to use white glue to stick the parts together - i had cracked it straight down the middle. I dipped it in future. Results were not great...the crack still stood out like a sore thumb so i sent off for a spare part in 2 days i got a package with the canopy in free of charge all the way from the Czech republic where Eduard is based! best thing is to send off for another give it a try hopefully you will be lucky like i was! mirage2000
hi, I've got the same problem with an ICM Mig3 kit... Forget the repair ... I've glued the broken parts with tamiya extra-thin cement, added a bit of superglue on the inside of the canopy just to reinforce it, sanded smoothly the outside when tamya cement has "dried" , filled the canopy with plasticine and picked a part of sprue. after you put the whole thing in the fridge for a couple of hours to hardening the plasticine. When the plasticine is very hard you pick ( that's why the part of sprue is usefull) your canopy filled on something and you can thermoform a new one easily. Hope it will help and good luck Luc
Sam747
I'm afraid your done with canpies once they have split in 2 pieces....even though you fix it with any clear glue but eye score crack will always be seen after the joint. I might be able to hepl you, just send me a line off board.. Takecare, Sam747
richter111
Okay just an idea, I havent tried this myself but I think it will work. Dip both ends into future. Aloow it to dry till its tacky, then gently press the pieces together. when its dry add a coat of future. It wont be the strongest repair but I think it should hold for that type of canopy.
