Possible weapon loadout for F-16D Block 42

Recommended Posts

I am going to build F-16D Block 42 90-0778 "MiG Killer".
That is a famous F-16 with one MiG-25 kill. I am going to make it in desert camouflage and I am thinking about possible and realistic loadout.
Regarding A2A weapon I know I can use AIM-9M and AIM-120C, but what about A2G weapon?
All Block 40/42 Vipers can carry all laser guided bombs and dumb bombs as well. Is anything more possbile?
Please advice me about that.

First American F-16 MiG killer gets Desert Camouflage paint scheme similar to that of the Desert Camouflage Uniform worn during the first Gulf War

What it would normally carry kinda depends on where it is assigned.  I think “LF” is the tail code used by the 56FW at Luke AFB, and IIRC they are a training unit now.  As such, I don’t know if you’d normally see anything other than inert missiles (AIM-120 on the wingtips and AIM-9 under the wings) for normal operations.  If you want to do an “airshow load”, you can pretty much put any ordnance (inert) you want under the wings that the jet is authorized to carry.

90-0778 is assigned to the 56FW but recently transferred to the 54OG at Holloman. Not sure which of the squadrons there it will join.

As training aircraft, they will fly with CATM-9M/X and CATM-120B/C's. For A2G, I would go for single GBU-38/54 or GBU-12 on mid-wing pylon. Maybe slaint mounted GBU-12 on TER on one side. You could also have a TER with 2xLAU-68, again slaint mounted. You could also go for GBU-31 in one of the versions there is of this one. Most bombs dropped during training are inert as the missiles, hence blue bodies, alternatively green or grey with blue band.
Targeting pod would likely be Litening pod.

Training aircraft are rarely loaded for bear, hence the A2G load wouldn't be at max unless you have photo references to refer to?

Tkanks guys.
Frankly said I would like to use „airshow load”, but with live, not inert ordnance.
The biggest problem is I don’t know what weapon is authorized for Block 40/42, especially A2G.
Second option for me is to use real weapons used during operation Souther Watch, where that F-16 served, it could be nice to use something from that time and place

Probably, but I still don't know what kind of bombs and other A2G ordnance could be use by the Block 40/42. Now and during Southern Watch.
As far as I know Block 42 couldn't use JDAM weapons, AGM-88 as well. Additionally Operation Southern Watch lasted between 1992-2003, so we have long enought period for very different ordnance introduced for USAF in those years.
I am going to make very "theoretical" loadout, but still would like to use ordnance apropriate for that timeframe and mostly, for that specific Block.

At one time I had the official store chart for each of the block variants.  It was a small multi-page foldout chart and showed the type and quantity of valid stores for each station.  If I still have it it would be in storage.

There is also a litho of the shootdown by K Price Randel showing the loadout at the time of the kill.  I'm sure it has been posted in another thread here but the forum search engine isn't very good....

I was able to find info describing the loadout of 0778 at the time of the shootdown:

STA  1/9    AIM-120C

STA  2/8    AIM-9(M?)

STA  3/7    (empty)

STA  4/6    370 GAL tanks

STA  5L      AN/AAQ-13  LANTIRN NAV pod

STA  5        AN/ALQ-119 (centerline)

STA  5R      (empty, no TGP)

The kill missile was fired from STA 1 (left wingtip rail)

Since you are planning to build 0778 in the current commemorative (sand) scheme you are not constrained to the actual shootdown loadout

Per today, they can carry everything the USAF has in the inventory;
GBU 10/12/16/38/54/31. GBU-12 single or slaint mounted, GBU38/54 single or on pallet
Dumb bombs Mk 12/10/16
AGM-65's
AGM-88's
LAU-68 rocket pods
GBU39/53

As was said, 778 has been transferred to Holloman, used in the F-16 B-Course. I was just at Luke last week and after talking to some pilots in the 309th, I was told the jet still retains the commemorative scheme.
I've seen the B-Course jets roll out with a mix of BDU-33 (25lb practice bombs) and blue inert Mk.82s/GBU-12s.

I'm reading you're wanting an airshow load, so the skies the limit.
