3D printed accessories on the way

Recommended Posts

In the next few months you will see a new range of 3D printed accessories and even full conversion sets from Caracal in different scales - similar to my decals I will concentrate on items that have not been done or neglected in the marketplace. More info coming on this soon! In the meantime let me know if you have any suggestions.

Great news!  How about some OOP items others made years ago but no longer available?
Example, 1/48 DC-130 Pinocchio nose that Cutting Edge put out almost 20 years ago.

Also, not sure about your printer, but there are several cockpit dash/interior details like Quinta produces that are wanted but not available.
Ex: 1/32 KH T-28 series, Kinetic/Italeri F-86 in 1/32. Speaking of F-86 in that scale, and I’m not sure exactly what would be required, but an FJ-4 Fury conversion would be welcomed.
Of course that would require a great set of decals to go with it.   I bet you know someone that could handle that!

Okay, enough from the 1/32 crowd for now.

I think we should concentrate on items that align with Caracal's decal releases and that are not readily available on the market.

For instance: 1/72 (& 1/144 eventually) AN/ARD-117 Dorsal Radome (JC-130B/HC-130N), DME antenna (C-130E/H), skis (LC-130D) to go with CD72117.  Or, 1/72 (& 1/144 eventually) DME antenna (C-130E/H), horse shoe fairings on either side of the nose u/c (C-130H), DIRCM bumps on rear fuselage (C-130H) for CD72062.

While EP-3E radomes and fairings are readily available for CD72090, should Kursad release NOAA WP-3D markings, then the starboard nose probe, tail X-band radar radome, and various underwing antennae would be nice.

Now that Fisher Model & Pattern is OOB, I would love to see a 3D printed 1/144 KC-135 nose to replace the Minicraft mess.  I would buy 30 right away.  Given a little more time to think, I will come up with some more suggestions. 🙂

Kind regards,

Dutch

Not sure where you're at with your plans but, I think a modern upgrade for the 1/72 UH-1N kit is sorely needed. The only thing out there doesn't have the bumps and sensors for an up to date variant.  I have the Fujimi kit in my stash that I've been putting off for years hoping for an update set.

Here's something that could open opportunities for decal sheets as well. None of the recent kits of the North American T-28 "Nomad" or "Fennec" represent the original version, the USAF T-28A, with it's smaller engine/cowl and two-blade prop. Lots of shiny metal T-28As were in service in the early '50s. I need it in 1/72 scale to fit either the old Heller or the newer Sword kit. Scaling up to 1/48 and 1/32 should be a cinch. Think about it!🤔

Great idea. Make them for the Zvezda kit.

I would add an EC-130 COMMANDO SOLO conversion kit.

Conversions to do early F-8 Crusaders. With all the posts by the late Tom Weinel, aka Superheat, there is plenty of information available for someone to do these correctly. All of the previous attempts by Muroc Models, Cutting Edge and CAT 4 have fallen short. And there is no shortage of markings that could be done to accompany the conversions.

I think expanding your products to include 3D printed accessories would be a perfect compliment to your decals.

How about a CORRECT 3-bladed prop set for the AC-119 in 1/72 scale? [It is depicted in the box art painting for the Italeri AC-119 kit but NOT included in the plastic inside the kit]

I will second this request.  I had a set by Veteran Models, but sold it a few years ago with my AC-119K kit. I have been looking for another set ever since. Talk about rare as hen's teeth and expensive as elvin nuts!

🤣

And these will go along beautifully when Kursad releases his C-119 sheet with C-119L markings.🙏

How about some modifications for the Revell CH-53G 1/144 kit?

  • Fuel tank mounts and small fuel tanks for the early USAF HH-53B version.
  • EAPS intake filters. These come with the HH-53C version of the kit but that kit is particularly rare these days.
  • A conversion kit for the USAF Pave Low, covering everything from the early HH-53H to the MH-53M.
  • Large fuel tanks and mounts for the CH-53D (could come from the Pave Low conversion set). A CH-53D set could also include the latest mods fitted to the CH-53D in Iraq and A/stan during the GWOT.
  • RH-53D conversion set (mirrors and fuel tanks/mounts).

Each set could include accurate shortened undercarriage legs to give the fuselage its proper sit and height when parked.

The "sugar scoop" exhausts for the AH-64 which have as yet only been included in ONE Hasegawa boxing (1/48).

Aside from that, I'd very much like to see 1/35 ammunition for the WW2 German 88mm Flak 41 This is an elusive weapon with only about 530 units built. It used different ammo than the famous 88mm Flak 18/36/37/Tiger I, and it was also different from the 88mm Pak/Kwk 43.

The gun itself has been released by now (injection moulded) by three makers in five or so boxings. Bronco are including a couple of shells, but these are wrong, being for a Pak 43. I'm aware that there are makers which specialize in artillery ammo, but none of them has stepped forward yet, and as you're explicitly asking for suggestions, there you are 😄

Here ya go.

  • 1/48 F-106 “Six Shooter” 20mm cannon fairing (open & closed door options?)
  • 1/48 AN/ASQ-153 Pave Spike
  • 1/48 GBU-10 LGB, early w/ fixed fins
  • 1/48 AN/AVQ-26 Pave Tack for your F-111F sheet
  • 1/48 AIM-4 Falcon for F-102, F-106, others
  • 1/72 C-121 replacement forward fuselage
  • 1/72 propellers for C-123, CL-215
  • 1/72 propellers and wheels for C-7 Caribou
  • 1/144 Wing Air Refueling Pods (WARP) for KC-10, KC-135, VC-10
  • 1/144 Cobham 905/8 air refueling pods for A400M, A330 MRTT, KC-767, and (I think) KC-46
  • 1/48 and 1/72 ADF "football" antennas

I’d say that replacing the Minicraft KC-135 nose is the #1 idea so far. The Minicraft B-52 nose might be #2. Pun intended.

I'll vote for the following which would extend the usefulness of existing Caracal decal sheets:

1. 1/72 Rascal missile pylon for the Hasegawa B-47. (You might also add the missile, but one is already available from Black Dog.) The only other option I know of is the long unavailable Skarkit Rascal and pylon from 20+ years ago. I've not had much luck finding enough reference material to accurately create one myself, but you might be better at that than me. You might not sell a ton, but it might not cost much to produce either provided you could design it.

2. Parts to convert the Revell 1/48 SR-71 to an A-12 and YF-12A. Maybe Jeffrey at Hypersonic Models already has some design work that could be adapted. (Or, I'd be glad to buy a complete A-12 kit, but I don't believe that would be economically viable.)

I'll add another: a 1/48 scale jungle penetrator to go with the USAF Rescue Helicopters sheet 48204. My AMP HH-43 kit needs both a jungle penetrator and your decals (hint).

An ignored subject which is sorely needed is replacement 1/72 TF-33 engine nacelles and pylons with optional leading edge turbo/compressor inlets for the AMT/Ertl -135 kits. The kit parts are lousy.  Bad fit, poor detail, no inlet duct, flat disc for a fan, etc. The T/C inlet option on the pylons would allow the kit to build the various versions that it was actually released as. The kit as it is in the box is a KC-135E (inlets on the inboards only, none on the outboards). A lot more of these kits would get built with better engine options.

I'd jump on this for two sets.

1 - Second the AIM-174B missiles (for F/A-18E/F).   1/48

2 - Proper 'early' nose for B-52G & H (non-EVS).   1/72

3 - Mods to go with the "Early Years" decal sheets (e.g. F-14, F-15).   1/72

Hi,

I'd also love the 1/144 KC-135 noses.

And engines for the 1/144 KC-135's. Not just engines for the KC-135E's, but also CFM 56's for the KC-135R's. These may well be of interest for airliner modellers. Some time ago, I was in the Aviation Megastore in Schiphol and I asked Erwin if there were any aftermarket 1/144 CFM 56's and there weren't.

And strakelets for the 1/144 GWH B-52G's. I'd love to be able to build some more subjects from CD 144-020.

A backdate set for the 1/144 B-1B's from CD 144-025 is also a great idea.

Cheers, Stefan.

I just picked up two sets of these, one each for a KC-135R and DC-8-71. Stunning. https://www.scalemates.com/kits/up-draft-model-works-ltd-1401-kc-135r-engines--1543364

On the JT3D / TF-33 engines for the 707 / C-135 variants; it would be great if someone made them mix-n-match, 1/144, with and without the turbo compressor inlets, as there were various combinations. I plan to do a WC-135B in 1/144. These had the no-turbo compressor inlet types in all four positions. Not sure if there was a standard KC-135E configuration since these were all modifications. Be a nice compliment to the Caracal sheets.
