Resurrecting like a Phoenix: 1/48 Italeri SR-71 Blackbird

Recommended Posts

Some 30 years ago I first built this kit, with just my 15 year old experience, glue, pencil and a simple Revell black spray can.

She was sitting for some time behind the other newer models, on which I was able to practice airbrushing.

I felt it was time to put the slender black beauty back into the spotlights, with a renewed tight black dress, new tattoos and some details that had to be on.

She has become the stunner of my collection again!

With pride I present to you the reconstructed Italeri 1/48 SR-71 Blackbird, in the Night Hawk livery, with Afterburner decals, Eduard grills and engines modifications and a Master brass pitot tube!

Fantastic result after the hard work you put into it!

And I'll just echo Rich by saying it was an enjoyable watch to see you tackle this renovation!

10/10 👍

Bastian,

Well done sir!  I remember building that kit in college.  It was pretty big.  I puttied seams, masked the glass and painted it gloss black from a rattle can. I remember having to sand some orange peel spots and repaint, but the paint job turned out okay.  Then applied the kit decals (hi-vis scheme) and sprayed it clear matte.  Built it for a zoomie friend and he loved it.  You have applied the PE and excellent repaint and decaling for a masterful result!   Well done indeed! Love the reference photo! Nice to have a piece of history to work from.

Kind regards,

Dutch

Tanks Dutch for your kind words, I very much liked to rebuild it and give her another (modified) dress.

Next one on the bench is a 1/48 Italeri Saab Viggen! Or renovating my Hasegawa 1/48 F-14 B Tomcat?

Wow, that that’s a master class paint job. It’s not easy to paint a black jet and you have knocked it out of the park.
