In flight display techniques

Recommended Posts

Hey all, looking at this build thread I thought the base with the clear support into the exhaust ports was pretty cool

Fairly new to the hobby and just thought I'd see what cool and effective idea's or techniques you've used for inflight displays?

Talbot, I'm flattered that you like my F-4!

Above are the sorts of work that has inspired me, and then there is the OMFG moments with A-10 LOADER's F-14 displays 🤯

Play around with ideas, borrow from the masters... I just like to try and capture a moment!

Good old bag of Airfix stands for tiny 1/144 planes.

Have also used coat hooks (painted) from Michael's, Banana hooks. Lots of stuff.

yeah your F4 looks fantastic!

and love the rocket affects on the Harrier

and the OMFG moments are an apt description, instantly clear the high level of skill and attention to detail of @A-10 LOADER builds

all these great examples are giving me ideas to strive for, thank you!

I should have added this to my original post. This is what I did for supporting the AC-J and EP-3 on their acrylic rods. I glued a piece of plastic tube for the acrylic rod to slide onto. That plastic tube goes from top to bottom, much more secure. The acrylic rod's outside diameter matches perfectly with the plastic tube's inside diameter so there is no play, again a solid connection. The aircraft can be slid on or off easily, HTH.

i use Bandai action bases for a lot of my in flight displays. these aren't very pretty at all but they're very cheap and low effort. they're made for gundam stuff but ear easily adapted to work with aircraft. i wouldn't try to put anything too big on them tho. the growler all loaded up is pretty heavy and is about as big as i would go.

What's the failure point when using the action bases with heavier models like Tomcats?  Is it the arm?

nah the arm was sturdy enough. the forward phoenix pallets meant that i had to try and place the action base adapter further back than the center of gravity, and so the kit was just too heavy, and was causing the whole base to want to tip over. i ended up just going with a big acrylic rod.

thanks! i like using the patches in my displays for the low-viz jets especially. gives a nice contrasting splash of color!

I've done a couple - basic stuff of brass tube embedded with epoxy in the fuselage then slipped over an acrylic rod.  I think the key is to get a composition that conveys the feel you want.
