John Tapsell
I wasn't really sure where to post this as it isn't an aircraft but is directly aviation-related. During WWII, the Germans anchored a line of Rettungsboje (rescue buoys) several miles off the French coast. They were placed so that Luftwaffe crews returning across the Channel with damaged aircraft couls attempt to ditch alongside one of these buoys. The buoys themselves contained four bunks, dry clothes. blankets, food, water and the means to heat the food up. They also contained a radio and were patrolled regularly by the Kriegsmarine. The Luftwaffe tended to call them Udet Boje (after Ernst Udet, who campaigned for their introduction), with the RAF called them Lobster Pots! For some reason the idea of building one got me inspired, so here is my (slightly inaccurate, but close enough) scratchbuilt lobster pot in 1/72 scale. I still need to complete the seascape and weather the heck out of the buoy, but we're getting there. The figure is from Beacon Models. STEN8
That's super cool!!! I remember seeing an old Popular Mechanics in the library that had a diagram of one....what a great job you did replicating it. Very, very well done, made my morning!!! Tank
Looks great. 👍 I had researched the topic years to attempt something similar but never got past the phase.
southwestforests
Nice project. Pilot guy adds indication of purpose, and a needed sense of size, even with having door and handrails.

Drifterdon
Super cool. I had never heard of these. Can't wait to see it in it's final setting of water and weather.
John Tapsell
A bit of photographic background. The buoys occasionally broke their moorings and drifted ashore - some as far as the British coast.
John Tapsell
The British developed a similar device called an ASB.
