My CH-53E book is almost sold out

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am down to the last 24 copies of my book on the CH-53E and I do not plan on reprinting it. If you were thinking about getting one, you might want to do it now.

It can be found at my store, along with the Aviation Bookshop, Aviation Megastore, Aviation Book Centre and The 48ers.

so what do you want to know?

I can answer pretty much any question you have on that.  Gull gray-esq how?  what do you mean?  we paint the aircraft out of NARF Depot according to the NAVAIR orders on scheme and colors.  I am at a loss as to what you mean?  Motivation to what?

Newer Shitters coming out of depot have been in a new semi-gloss paint scheme that isn't the same as the old 36375/35237 the rest of the fleet (skids, V-22s) is in.  I know it's based on TYCOM direction, I'm just curious as to the reason for said direction.   It's not a huge deal, really just a curiosity on my end.

Mason, does the book by chance have any details on the motivations behind the newest gull gray-esque scheme the 53s are getting as they cycle through the depot?

Not really, since I don’t know why they are all going semi-gloss Medium Gray, FS 25237.

I believe that the MH-53E fleet went that color as well, along with the Navy C-130s. It is probably easier to keep clean.

Mostly for corrosion control.  The new semi-gloss helps the fleet keep the aircraft cleaner and less engine exhaust build up.  As you well know if you know to call them "Shitters" that they are one messy helicopter.  A lot of oil leaks, hyd leaks, grease etc.  It is what it is, they leak.  It was thought for years that any type of gloss finish on military aircraft would make that aircraft a target for Air to air, Ground to air missile systems.  Well over the last 10 + years that thought has gone away.  I am not sure of the actual paint ingrediants, nor will I speculate as most of the LOW IR painting and coatings are somewhat classified, but I do think technology and the ability to try and keep the airtcraft somewhat clean have caught up with each other.  The painting and coatings of the 90's to 2005 ish were so flat, that at least on the 53D/E aircraft it became a detriment.  Espcially the aircraft based in Hawaii and Okinawa, (Or aboard ship) where the interiors of the aircraft with the flat finishes would actually grow mold in them.

The TYCOM is just trying to keep his fleet of Shitters up I guess.  I do know the DEPOT CH-53E that came out of Oregon a few years ago was more than ...um "semi-gloss".  But it was easy to keep clean!!
