Request: 1/48 Schoolhouse Test Talons

Recommended Posts

Hey Kursad! I appreciate you taking the time to listen to all our requests.

I have a few Talons to recommend, probably for the Wolfpack kit. I don't believe any of these have been made to date, and I think you'll find them quite nice.

In an ever increasing list of Heritage and special schemes on T-38s, these ones stand out at their respective schoolhouses. Despite the aircraft's age and their gradual retirement, the US still values these aircraft for the purpose of training, and these aircraft are likely the most advanced.

T-38C 614856, United States Naval Test Pilot School (USNTPS), NAVAIR, 2021

First on the list is this extremely attractive T-38C, one of the Boss Birds at the USNTPS. While the other already attractive T-38Cs in the fleet have a white with scarlet scheme (Wolfpack #WPDDEC48019), this aircraft sports a striking white, red and cyan blue scheme.

The aircraft bears the number 15.

T-38C 64-13197, United States Air Force Test Pilot School, 2024

While white Talons are becoming an increasingly rare sight in the sky, this one remains at its stomping grounds at Edwards Air Force Base. Unlike the other Talons on base, this iconic aircraft is marked specifically for the USAF TPS as part of the curriculum for the elite pupils who train at the school. This aircraft works in tandem with other highly technical aircraft like the X-62A VISTA.

Note the zaps on the spine of the aircraft. The simple red stripe with "Shadow" represents the aircraft as it appears as of 2024, and is what is requested.

Crew names clearly visable.

T-38A N638TC, National Test Pilot School, 2024

Didn't think I'd ever recommend a civilian aircraft, but here we are.

This one was exciting to research. Based in Mojave, CA, NTPS is the only civilian test school in the United States, and their striking white, blue and grey T-38A is one of a substantial list of aircraft the school utilizes. The school even have aircraft such as an L-39, MiG-21 and UH-1 at their disposal.

This aircraft seems to have been a civilian Talon for at least most of its life. The aircraft was even used in film, appearing in Dragnet, Hot Shots and and S3E4 of Airwolf.

That's the three I got! What do you think, Kursad?

The USNTPS and USAF TPS schemes, as well a few heritage jets that showed up recently, will be among the subjects of CD48163 which will be coming in Feb/March. For those who prefer the older "classical" schemes, I am reprinting CD48057 soon.

I happen to have the Trumpeter kit at hand but I am aware of the dimensional differences between them, and will make sure the decals will be usable on both. Specifically the USNTPS emblem on the tail is a tight fit against the span of the tail, and I might end up providing two versions.

Thanks I just wanted to know which kit I need to stock up on 🙂

Super exciting news! Can't wait to see the finished results!

I'm definitely inclined to do these with the Wolfpack kit
