Viperguy
Getting ready to use AK Real Colors Laquer Based Paints. Do you need a primer with them? I used to used Testor’s Model Master Enamels. It’s a whole new world.
Kurt H.
You do not have to use a primer, but it is helpful. Are you airbrushing the paint?
Chuck1945
I use Mr Color, Hataka Orange series, MRP, and some AK Real Colors - all are acrylic lacquers and I only use primer if I’m checking checking for construction blemishes.
Viperguy
Yes. That’s what I plan on using. Never have been any good on large areas.
Kurt H.
Coming from enamels it is not too much different, but you will find lacquers are more forgiving, and less likely to run . you can get much closer to the surface of the model, and they dry faster. If you get what appears to be silly string coming from your airbrush, then add more thinner. Lacquers are really easy to airbrush, and the only thing you will be wondering is, why you did not try it sooner!
Peacemaker
I absolutely love Ak real colours, the colours are spot on. I find I prefer the 10ml jars vs the 17ml droppers, they say they didnt change the formulation but the 10ml jars spray on like silk. I use the Mr Hobby thinners (levelling and rapid.) I use primer as part of the construction process but as other have mentioned being a lacquer they will chemically etch into plastic without it.
Curt B
I use a variety of paints, including AK Real Color. I find the AK product most similar to Tamiya paints (not their relatively new lacquer paints in bottles, but their original acrylic paints) in terms of performance, which is a good thing. I have used the AK brand thinner for these paints, and I have had great success in cleaning my airbrush with alcohol after using them. Oh, regarding primer…I’ve used the AK paints both with and without primer (my primer of choice is Stynylrez) but the paint seems to perform similarly in both cases. Incidentally, Tamiya Acrylics and AK Real Color can be mixed without issue.
