B-29 "DOC" Decals

I have the artwork for decals (nose art and tail number) if you know anyone who can do custom decals.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind, but I forgot "Doc" doesn't have the turrets, and I don't really want to do that conversion in 1/48.  Maybe I'll look at a smaller B-29 for DOC

With the Academy/Minicraft 1:144 B-29 having that horrid tail (B-17-like), you could always use the Revell/Atlantis kit in 1:133.

Not bad in basic shape if you want a basic desk style model. It has turrets, but given it's size, they aren't unworkable. The Atlantis reissue comes with a old Revell style plastic swiveling stand.

And at $18, not a bad price.

The hill got a little bit taller this year with the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE update of Doc's markings.  There are lots of places that can do custom decals - there's a place in Tucson that I've spoken to in the past about doing decals.  Reproductions, Inc.  Are you still game for this?  The decals could be sized for pretty much any scale, but I would think 1/72 or 1/48 would be needed to do the aircraft justice.

Thanks, @Sabrejet... exactly as pictured.  There's no shortage of reference images.  Doing it pretty much as I expect it will be this coming Saturday when I plant myself in the bombardier's seat for a "Flight Experience"  ...a glorified obscenely expensive aeroplane ride.  $50/min.  😆

Hope you had fun!

Are you trying to do Doc in-period or in its 'modern' guise? Bear in mind that the aircraft was a target tug in period, so you'd need to add the under-fuselage tow gear if you're doing it as it was whilst in service.

It was only a target tug for a very short time. It served in a radar squadron for most of it's operational life and made a number of endurance flights.

Doc restoration vet here. (2004-2014)

Decals don't exist in any official format and likely won't due to licensing rights from Disney. They wouldn't even let us use the original "Doc" artwork that was on the nose when we pulled it out of the desert. There was one licensed image of Doc that they let us use and that's it. (for those not in the know, the artwork that was originally on the nose during '69972's operational life was very different). They did eventually convince disney to let them use the original art for some merch, but Disney was adamant that if we were going to continue to call the aircraft "Doc" that the more official-style artwork remain on the actual aircraft.

I did at some point draw up some art for decals that I had intended to throw on an Atlantis kit that I had modified to represent Doc's configuration (no turrets, no radar) but I can't be bothered to find the art just now. You'd have to either print it on white decal paper or else cut out a white backing for it anyway, since most commercially available printers can't print white. Next time I sit down to make some custom decals, I'll dig through the folder and see if I can find it.

@Skull Leader  That's really awesome that you were part of the restoration.  Doc is definitely up there on my list of favorite Warbirds.  Some how its become my wife's favorite too.   We look forward to seeing her at Oshkosh every year.   You all did an amazing job on the restoration.  Some day I'd like to take a flight, either while at Oshkosh or if it ever comes near us in Eastern NC.

As for a model, I am still deciding what kit/scale I wanna do.   But I would do the restored version rather than the original.

In the mean time here are some photos of Doc from Oshkosh 2025.  We had to leave before they put it Boeing Plaza, so only shots from the Wednesday night airshow

Thanks! I mostly shot some of the new skin (forward lower turret cradle, starboard side of the front fuselage, wing cap, belly pan, bomb bay doors). The longest term project I was part of was taking the belly pan and restoring it to the pre-radar configuration. We had to figure it out from photographs, as the set of blueprints Boeing provided us were all for the later mods that featured the radome. I was also part of the team that installed the wing.

My very last project before my group finished was helping provide the first buff-job... she sure was shiny when we rolled her out after that!

Don't feel bad, most of us volunteers still haven't gotten to take a ride!

Doc ended its life as a target tug; it's the configuration it was recovered in, and it's also the markings it currently wears; wing, tail stripes were Tow Squadron markings.

YOU'RE NOT MY DAD!

edit: They'd be out of date now anyway, mine are from before they added the tug/squadron markings.
