Tariff Impact on Our Hobby

Recommended Posts

Honesty, I had no idea where this thread would go when I started it. Like many of you, I already have 10x as many kits as I could reasonably build in my remaining lifetime, but that still doesn’t mean I don’t want to get the latest and greatest kit(s) that continue to come out, especially on subjects that I find interesting and may not have had an appropriate plastic version previously available.  I’m hoping that even the Chinese manufacturers won’t be significantly impacted, because I’ll still buy, as long as the prices don’t hit the stratosphere.  I’m not interested in letting the tariffs affect my hobby life.

great news, the average canadian was going to pay the price for our (canada's) dysfunctional leadership

I hope this works out over the coming weeks

still going to stock up over the next couple of weeks of the top items on my wish list though

Generally speaking, just because someone gets results and delivers on their promises doesn't mean it was the right thing to do.  By the same token, just because someone doesn't get results doesn't automatically mean their promise was the wrong thing to do.

I just like how this conversation has remained civil. Canadians and Americans have always worked great together.....Well since 1812 anyway!

It was a stretch not locking it, and I am sure not erasing anything said. (said so FAR at least)

Honestly had no idea.

Your news does not cover Canada much. Ours is pretty much of late been 90% what is happening in your country.

Aaaaannnnd Canada gives in to meet 47's demands. I'd bet money those tariffs never take affect either. You can hate the man all you want, but he does what he feels needs to be done to get the results he wants. Is it always done the nice way? Absolutely not. Does it always work? Some times. He is a horrible speaker, is far from 'Presidential', sometimes just needs to STFU, but gets results and delivers on his promises.

But Dave, are you not entertained?!  🤣
edit:  Forgot to add, Lately I’ve been finding better deals outside of the US on some items.  I currently have a kit on the way from Super Hobby in Poland that was much cheaper with free shipping after adding a $10 decal sheet to the order.
Ordered an RC airplane engine out of Australia for a hundred bucks less than any eBay sellers here in the states.  It is an out of production model, and I think eBay sellers are trying to take advantage of that and the fact they have heavy fees to pay there.

He wants secure borders. That seems to be his goal. My wife was wondering if the goal was to get Mexico (where the obvious majority of the problem lies) to play ball, but didn't want to "single them out" somehow, so he threatened the countries on both borders to get what he wanted out of the one. I don't know. She may have something there, she may not. Who fully knows what is in another person's mind?

Tariffs are a bully policy, they only antagonize their targets and (economically) punish the end customers, not the importers. Goods will either be end-run through other countries or the tariff will be tacked onto the price the consumers pay. The only "winner" is a certain person's ego.

Even if they go through another country, they have import duties and dockworkers and fuel that work provided to the ships. Not just a quick transfer of shipping country.

Couldn't keep it on topic, huh? 🙄

I don't get your post. The topic was the tarrifs. My post had to do with those, and what my wife thought the rationale was for Trump imposing them. It's no different than other comments in this thread, so what's your point?

The topic is about the impact on the hobby. Not you and or your wife's thoughts on the reasons for them in Canada or Mexico. But the veiled jabs at the President, are not going unnoticed.

Whatever. Read the thread. There is plenty of other references to the border and why the tarrifs are happening. And there was no veiled jab at the president either. Since you feel I've already crossed the line, I WILL get political for a second. I happen to support secure borders...North AND South, and although I strongly believe in immigration reform, I believe Trump has the US's best interests at heart when he says come in through the front door, or don't come in at all.

Just checked on E-Bay and the price on both the 1/72 Vespid Kits I have on my watchlist, and the Fore Art 1/72 kit, and the Dream Model 1/72 Mirage 2000N are ALL the same price as when I put them on the list in the first place. For what that's worth.

I am wondering the same, how would tariff affect ebay? does it mean if we buy from a seller in China the buyer has to pay tariff on top of the sales price through ebay? or it will be held in custom till the buyer pays for the tariff to get it delivered?

Here in the UK - in our case the 'tariff' is classed as VAT - eBay is responsible for collecting and passing it to HMRC, and it appears on listings accordingly, as below:

It's quite possible they might now have to amend their US system to do similar - with the UK (and EU) model(s) to draw on, they could likely implement such a change fairly quickly...

If I were to buy direct online, then HMRC would apply the charge once the item arrives at the International Mail Centre - Royal Mail would notify me and collect prior to making delivery...

....again, the IRS and USPS may have to come up with a similar arrangement.

One of my hobbies is working on an old car I've had for decades. Bought a radiator for it Sunday-made in China, $118. Monday it was $160.

My stash is large enough that I'll die before it's depleted so I am not too concerned.

That is what I refer to as SABLE

And I am in the same boat......I have too many in the stash and to few on the bench.

As far as the tariffs are concerned, most of us always look for bargains in our hobby.  So we scour the internet and our own ARC site for good deals, sales etc.  We also like the new hot stuff and if willing to pay, then pay.  If its to high priced wait for someone to re-sale it.    If my hobby was buying and reselling cars, boats I would be worried....
