Academy 1/144 B-1

Recommended Posts

Academy's excellent 1/144 B-1B. Out of the box except for Wolfpack's 3D printed burner cans (a must I think). Primed with Mr Surfacer 1500. Main color was AK Real color Gunship Grey with Tamiya LP for the various other panels. The AK sprayed nicely mixed with Mr Leveling thinner. Decals were out of the box, printed by Cartograph. Weathering was mostly with AK Oil brushers and Abteilung oils. Duke Hawkins book on the B-1 proved an excellent reference.

Inspiration for the build came from the Wings of Blue podcast with the Gen Richard Clark, Superintendent of the Air Force Academy. His crew earned several awards over Baghdad during OIF.

Yes! Absolutely beautiful.  I especially like the alternating light/dark petals painted on the inside of the burner cans! Uncanny!

As Bob Ross would say it ended up being a happy accident. I used one of the new AK pens for the ceramic petals, but it bled under the masking tape. I used some Tamiya

X20a thinner to try and clean it up and ended up with something resembling the real thing.

I'll have to try that technique!
