Mostly because others know more about this than I ever will, but with the future security of the ARC forums being a concern it may only be a matter of time before something devious happens and we’re all on the outside looking at nothing asking “what’s next?”  The recent vulnerability and total lack of direct involvement from the owner are not encouraging in the long term.

Kursad have you given thought to where we would all go to meet up again and try to continue this community of Caracal?

I’d hate to lose ARC for any reason, but mostly because of what goes on in this forum. I can imagine the effect on your enterprise could be difficult.  Your forum is the last active of the manufacturers.

Thoughts on “Plan B?”

I'm 100% with you on that. This has been on the back of my mind for a while.

There's so much that would be lost if (when) ARC goes offline and the Caracal section is gone.

Agreed. Unfortunately, I guess the most workable alternative would be the cesspool that is Facebook. Or, if Kursad was feeling extra masochistic, he could always increase his workload exponentially by adding a forum to his website….😄

An alternative could be a page on Facebook. Now, I am well aware that many don't like the book of faces. However, it is possible to have a presence on FB without anyone knowing it's you. A profile can be created using a fake name, and you don't have to post any photos or personal information. Kursad's profile name could literally be Caracal Decals, and the posts would be exactly as they are here. Just something to consider.

While I agree that an alternative place would/could be desirable/necessary, I strongly disagree with choosing Facebook. I do have an account there. My experience is that when I go somewhere to read up on a topic, half of the comments are simply not shown in the first place. Even if I check the option to "show all comments", there are still obviously missing some, or rather many, comments. To add to the confusion, the comments are not shown in chronological order.

A sensible discussion is simply impossible on Facebook. It's all based only on likes and algorithms.

Kursad seems to frequent Britmodeller. Perhaps this Caracal subforum could find a new home there, or under the roof of some other forum. Myself, I'm only registered on two others, but I'm sure there are more.

My preference.  But not my call.

Best idea.

I stopped following Afterburner/Bullseye and Speedhunter decal lines when they went to Facebook. I don't/won't do facebook, life is too short.

There was talk of charging an initial or annual subscription for ARC Forum users.  I would gladly pay.  I know Steve ran the Mai's garage YouTube channel banner to create revenue in order to support the site.

Has anyone approached Steve Bamford about purchasing the ARC website and then charging a subscription or running other modeling ads?

I offered to help during COVID and he turned me down, maybe he can be convinced to take help now.

He'd have to make contact with someone, or act like he gives a rat's behind...

LOL.  The problems people have with Facebook have nothing to do with the name you use to register.

Okay......it was merely a suggestion. Don't really care what other people's reasons/problems are. For me personally, and for Flying Leathernecks, the pros of FB have vastly outweighed the cons.

TBH: I looked at the cost of the program this forum runs, plus hosting and everything.   Going with what Dutch said, it wouldn't be a lot per person to keep it running.   I'd do it if I can figure it all out.

I get the travel and work part but he either isn't alive or he just doesn't care about this place anymore.  There's no way you can be so busy you can't spend an hour making someone else an admin to maintain the site better.

I have been a member here going on maybe 22 years, mostly a lurker but when this thing goes teats up it's going to suck.  All because someone couldn't grant some admin privs to someone else.

I mean they have the internet in the Philippines

Welfare check?

I was just stating that he may not be where anyone can do a welfare check.  Does anyone know where he resides?
