Along time ago... STAR WARS!

So when Star Wars came out, I wasn't as taken with it as much as most of my friends. I've always been into Star Trek and Star Wars didn't seem to speak to me in the same way.

Fast forward to December of 1979, and my friends camped out with me to catch the first showing of Star Trek The Motion Picture. Naturally I did the same for them a few months later for the Empire Strikes Back... and I fell in love with that movie! After the opening showing I rushed back in line to watch it again. And by the end of the opening weekend I had seen it four times.

A few weeks ago I sat down to watch the Empire Strikes Back (because I hadn't seen it in nearly a year) and I realized that I hadn't built a Star Wars model since the early 80's. So I decided I'd scratch build a snowspeeder (my favorite Star Wars vehicle).

I know that there are tons of snowspeeder model kits, but scratch building a subject is the best way for me to really learn a subject. I figured that for this first attempt at a study model, I'd build it at one-quarter studio scale. The goal is to make sure that my plans actually work more than attempting a perfect replica on my first try.

So this is what I started with...

I printed this out on an 8.5" x 14" sheet of paper and then made most of the pieces I needed out of a sheet of styrene. Here are some shots of the key elements taped together to check my progress...

The remaining elements I built with whatever scraps I had on hand.

Interestingly, my scratch build TOS shuttlecraft was also one-quarter studio scale, so showing both of them side-by-side gives a relative size comparison of the original models to each other.

Here is the finished study model...

Again, it is my first Star Wars model in decades and the main goal is familiarizing myself with this subject.
