wm_cheng
Help, what are the best Mr. Color lacquer paints to use for this 3-tone blue/green camo for the SU-34? (I see MRP makes a set, but I am not familiar with them, are they a lacquer - I would prefer to stick to Mr. Color if possible). I think there might be some mixing involved I guess. (I'm prepping for the upcoming 1/72 TempModels resin SU-34 but I don't have Mr. Color information). TIA!
seawinder
IMHO MRP will be a better choice if they've got the correct colors in their line. MRP is a lacquer (can be mixed with Mr. Color). The paints are pre-thinned and airbrush only. They don't nail every shade (who does?), but in my experience they're generally at least well within the ballpark. wm_cheng
Thanks, I can’t seem to find MRP Paints anywhere in Canada? Are they true lacquers? Tamiya X-20A doesn’t affect them? (I’d like to try that ink wash/weathering over the paint)
seawinder
I'm not sure what true lacquers are. MRP paints are part of that growing group of lines that are often called acrylic lacquers. As I said, they mix easily with Mr. Color, which I think is also characterized as an acrylic lacquer (whether accurately or not). Like Mr. Color, MRP paints are impervious to mineral spirits (regular paint thinners), and things like Tamiya Panel Line Accent can be used over them without the need for a barrier coat. Dunno if this is any help. As for sourcing them, are you able to purchase from Sprue Brothers? If so, they carry the MRP line and have four different Su-34 colors in stock: https://spruebrothers.com/search-results-page?q=su-

(I’d like to try that ink wash/weathering over the paint) i recently tried this over MRP lacquers and the X-20A took it clean off. didn't effect the mr. surfacer underneath tho. however, a light coat of GX100 over the MRP before working with the inks and X-20A was enough to protect it. i've had no issue with the X-20 over mr color paints. wm_cheng
Oh that's what I was afraid of - THANKS @annie.shikinami! I will have to try these light coats of GX100 to protect paints underneath @seawinder thanks for the link, I tried but unfortunately when I checked out of Spruebrothers it says "Unfortunately one or more items in your cart can't be shipped to your location." - I think there must be a ban on these types of paints in Canada as I can't find them anywhere. Is there any instructions with Mr. Color mixing ratios?
seawinder
wm, sorry about your sourcing difficulties. I'm afraid I don't know of any mixing instructions for Mr. Color.
wm_cheng
Thanks @seawinder Does anyone have instructions for any of the other 1/48 scale SU-48 kits that might have Mr. Color references?
Helmsman
AKAN is a very good option. https://tempmodels.ru/sovremennaya-aviaciya-rossii-su-32-
wm_cheng
Are they lacquers - wonder if they work with Mr. Hobby leveling thinners? I may have to look into that, as I did pre-order the 1/72 SU-34 from them, so that's what this inquiry is all about.
Helmsman
They're not fully compatible but still work. I've diluted them with leveling thinner right before spraying and it worked great. Airbrush can be cleaned with reguar laquer thinner. The best would be to get the original AKAN thinner just for spraying. https://tempmodels.ru/firmennyj-razbavitel-68073

They're good paints and well researched.
