CD48242 - 1/48 F-16C Dark Vipers Part 6

Recommended Posts

CD48242 will be the sixth Dark Vipers sheet, coming in October/November timeframe. Some of the options on this and the previous two Dark Vipers sheets will go into a third 1/72 scale Dark Vipers sheet, to be announced later.

Nice! 😁

Have you filled up the sheet or is there still openings for suggestions? I know I and others came up with several suggestions in the other thread a while back?

Yes, some of those (Florida, Indiana new scheme, Arizona ANG aircraft) will be on the sheet but I always can use more options to choose from.

Indiana 122FW 163FS is a must for sure if you ask me. Linebird(s) not atleast.

The 52FW 480FS USAFE have a couple of cool new ones in HG5, both with black markings and the older greys (90-0828 in black and 96-0083 in grey as examples). (Mind you, the 480FW wing king jet is already on Pt. 3
The 31FW 510FS have a couple of new ones with black markings (89-2049 and 89-2057 as examples)

The 35FW 13FS and 14FS PACAF haven't been done yet and have nice ones with black markings, both line birds and squadron/OG/5AF boss birds and dual seater (90-0844)
The 51FW 36FS also have some nice ones, although partly covered earlier by others🤔

Then there is the new 354FW 18FIS jets that replaced most of the older agressors which has also not been done before (87-0264, 87-0235, 88-0409)

Maybe include some extra AF87/88/89/90....01 etc and numbers in both black and grey depending on the sheet space. Could also be a new one for the basic line?

Heck, you soon have enough to set up Dark Viper Pt 7 "PACAF" with these and the prior suggestions from others in the other thread😁😆

I am sure others have some suggestions also and look forward to seeing what these might be 😃👍

Let me know and I can forward some references I've gathered?

I just spent two days walking around this F-16C from the Ohio Air Guard.  It also appeared in these markings at the 2025 Toledo Air Show and Dayton Air Show, so its a popular subject.  I have a full walkaround of 50 plus pictures of this jet- say the word and I will get them to you!

The top one (Black Sheep jet) is a Block 42 - I think the others are Block 50 (AZ), Block 30(FL) and Block 40 (IN)

The AZ jet is a Block 70/72.

86-355 is a Block 30 jet.  Only Blocks 40 and later are being upgraded to Block 70 standards.

I stand corrected and, Google is not my friend. 😆

It is interesting to note that the USAF (Incl. ANG/AFRC) don't consider the updates to be a "block" update, but a more general updates in different "smaller" programmes, even if they amount to effectively the same as the block 70/72. Quite a few of these mods do also trickle into the block 30/32 fleet.
The 113FW 121FS amongst others have jets with the Sabr radar. AESA Radar Launches F-16 Into Next Generation of Air Power
I wouldn't be surprised if the CDU and other mods from the block 70/72 have also been incorporated.

Here is a descripton of the mods done to the block 40-52 fleet, without change to the block standard: USAF launches huge upgrade program for its F-16s - Skies Mag

Agree, the "Block" is determined at build time.  Mods and upgrades Do Not change the Block.  The MLU upgrade to existing Block 10/15 jets Did Not make the them Block 20 airframes.  Block 20 jets were built new with the same avionics as MLU, but it was their original configuration, not a mod or upgrade.  The MLU program was Very Similar to the USAF CCIP program for Blocks 40/42/50/52, but no one calls those CCIP jets Block 20.

From what I've read, it is only the RoCAF/Taiwan F-16A/B's that are refered to as block 20. European MLU'ed jets where for a while refered to as block 20, but this was substituted for AM/BM designation. Similarly, the USAF block 40/50/42/52 became CM/DM's after CCIP.

In the end, the block number don't matter, but what it can do with a weltrained pilot.
