Airworthy OH-6As in the eastern US? Found it!

Recommended Posts

At 1130 local today, my wife and I watched a low-flying OH-6A flying along US64 near Cox Field (NC81) in Apex, NC. We were able to watch it for a while, since it was moving relatively slow and the sun was behind us, so I was able to clearly see the short skids, original tail, and flat olive drab paint. My wife was unimpressed when I pointed these details out to her. 😄 I can't figure out how to look up historic radar picture of that time on FlightAware or Flight Radar to see if they had an N number for it. Anyone know if there is a way? Is there a list of airworthy OH-6s somewhere? I've tracked down a couple of N numbers but they've been nowhere near NC.

Thanks!

Ben

EDIT:

Figured out how to run FlightRadar24 back. It's N546:

4=

It sure looked flat olive drab today in  the bright sun.

Can you describe any other markings it had? That might help. There are a few OH-6As and a few older Hughes 500s flying in Olive Drab markings so something that stands out will help identify it.

Did it have the small window in the rear door? Any colours on the tail? Were the numbers on the doghouse in black and yellow or black and white? Stuff like that.

Some people. 🙄😁

I’ll give her a pass since she’s put up with me for almost 40 years.😂

@Loach Driver, I must’ve updated my post and left before I saw your reply. Sorry. It turns out it’s based about 30 miles from me. I can’t hotlink the other photos I found, but here are a couple more shots of it:

In that case she should be calling out the details to you. 😁

Good post. Wonder what the history is for bird.

I know this guy is also still flying around. I seen it a few times at AirVenture the past couple years. Most recently this summer. Don’t know where it’s based out of though.

Now that I'm back on my computer, here's what it looked like when I saw it yesterday. So is it an OH-6, or an olive drab civil bird? Either way, it was good to see the type flying again. I don't recall seeing an OH-6 since I saw the Silver Eagles as a kid, and the last civil one I saw was WRAL's Sky 5 back in the early 80s. I've always liked the design, especially with the original tail.

It's an OH-6A. I have tried to identify its original Army serial number but the net is not throwing anything up. It is either a Series 1 or Series 2 OH-6A, not a Series 3. If I find anything further on it, I'll add it here.

I think that the smaller aft doors, the "cheap" front seats (no comfy upholstery for hard-assed aviators...) and the external power receptable (under the right side of the front right seat) strongly hint at an ex-military OH-6A. Cool that someone is keeping such oldtimers airworthy!
