Al,

Are these the same ones that require so much work? Wasn't sure if they've been reworked or not. CE nozzels

Yep that's the ones! It's not so bad, there are some good solutions in this thread if you don't mind hacking through it all.

I'll look for that DACO book and if I can't find it I'll send you a message. I've got my Memphis Belle decals (couldn't find the Raiders in 1/48) in and the CE details set. Also Shawn Hull has received my order for the ALE-50s and I still need to decide which bombs to order from him. I have no idea what the CRLs look like (guess I'll get that from the book) and I've never scratch built anything before. That will definitely be a challenge for me.

There are some great pics in the Daco book of the CRLs - you will see they don't need that much work if you use the SRAM launchers as a basic.

Got your PM, thanks.

Al

Hey guys, long time reader, first time poster to this thread.

I just bought a 1/48 BONE off of another forum member and am contemplating starting the build later this summer. It came with the TwoBobs Seek & Destroy decals, and I also bought the DACO book.

I have a couple of quick questions.

1) I don't have the space to display this kit in a wheels down position. Did anyone else grapple with this? I would really love to have it wheels down, wings out, flaps and slats extended, bomb bays open and detailed...etc... Maybe some day. But right now it isn't in the cards. The best I could probably do is hang it from the ceiling, wings swept, with one of Shawn Hull's -31's releasing out of the bomb bay.

I was just curious to see if anyone else had this "space" issue and whether or not you regretted not doing wheels down.

2) Exhaust: Now that CE is out of the picture, the only other option that I know of is the Eduard PE set. One alternative that I can think of is the Aires F-15E exhaust cans. I know they are different engines, but in looking at page 14 in the DACO book, and then looking at the 1/48 Aires F-15E cans, they could "pass". Again, my application will be "in flight" hung from the ceiling, so full on up close inspection of the exhaust nozzles won't really be an option. Do you think the Aires cans, although more expensive, would be a valid route? Or do I take my chances in assembling the Eduard set? Looking at the two, I feel I have a higher probability of making a decent exhaust out of the Aires set, but I am open to suggestions.

Will,

My B-1B....which is in a disgraceful heap in my closet...was going to be modeled wheels up, but not because of lack of space (although that is always a factor). The problem was, I screwed up TWO sets of rear landing gear. I also have personal concerns as to their strength in holding up the huge beast. I'm sure it would hold it up if it were in a nice display case and NEVER messed with, but if you wanted to be able to pick it up and show it to your friends that come over, I think it would be only a matter of time before they gave way. Personally, I think the BONE looks better wings swept and gear up with the bays open....business commencing.

I have the CE resin exhaust. While it looks good in photos, it was a bit too small for my nacelles. Lots of milliput to correct this....and it still didn't look perfect. Also, if I am not badly mistaken, the F-15 nozzle will be way too small to use. They do look almost identical, but the scale version and the real deal are totally different sizes. I think it just couldn't be made to work. I bet the 1/48 F-15 nozzles are closer to the size needed for a 1/72 BONE. I'd hate to have you buy the Aires F-15 nozzle thinking they will work.

Get ready for it....this is NOT a quick build, especially considering if you do anything to the bomb bays / rotary launcher. My suggestion is, go ahead and say you have 1 year to build it....that way if you finish early you feel good about it. If you go over a year, you are with the majority of other modelers who have tried it. Since you are going to work on this kit, I'd say to try the Eduard exhaust...mainly because the CE kit is going to be hard to find, if not impossible. The Eduard exhaust looks awesome and is very accurate looking. I think you trade hours of time for hours of time no matter what option you go with (unless you use the kit's old feathered exhaust). Since you are going to spend so much time on a model, what is a few more weeks? Plus, I don't even think the Aires F-15 nozzle is a viable option.

I'd also recommend starting on the nacelles. In my limited experience, they are the most aggravating part of this kit and much of the work will be down hill from there. Just get them out of the way and move on to happier times.

Good luck with her....she is mighty impressive in the end!

Thanks for the input Jed! You are completely right regarding the 1/48 F-15E cans. I had remembered in an FSM article a while back, Paul Boyer used Aires F-15E cans on his 1/72 BONE. The detail I forgot was that he used the 1/48th ones on it ;)

Looks like I'll be ordering the Eduard set. And yes, I am in no hurry with this build. I figure this will be a long term one I can always fall back on, in between my other smaller projects.

Thanks again for the insight!

Hi Dom...

Regarding the following two posts about your B-1B flaps

The way you describe you fix the flaps together as you would have done if they were still attached to the wing, the I beams were 3.2mm from side to side but how long where they?

Also why did you go with 3.2mm?

Ive got some I beam but its 2mm or Ive got another piece of plastic thats 3mm but its U shaped but with squared "edges" not rounded.

Why did you go with an I beam? Is that what shape the rails are on the real deal?

Also what were the dimentions of the "bars" for the slats?

And did you raise the over wing spoilers? If so do you have any ref photos of what it under the spoilers when in the open/up position?

Dear bone builders,

I'm not dead

Here are some in progress pictures of my Bone.

First the wings which are finished with the flaps and slats down, starboard lights and so on.

The next batch is for the tail which is fitted with some plastic cards (0.13"). The vortex generators have been placed with care and precaution but at the end, it was not so hard just have to be patient :D

The Chaff/flares dispensers have been built with french mirage F-1CR reco camera box

End of the first post, due to pictures limitations

Dom

Hy,

To build the flaps, I use the some plastic card (0.25mm thick) and "I-beam" (3.2mm).

First, I cut the upper/lower flaps of the wing then glue them together.

After this, I glue the I-beam parts in the flap.

Finally, I put a rectangular plate between each two I-beam previously glued.

I hope the pictures will help you to understand what I mean

If not, don't hesitate to ask me further questions

Cheers

Dom

Hi

I just started my B1 B.... (accidentaly posted it on Critique corner) but I was looking at photos on Airliners.net and noticed that when parked... its flaps aren't extended. So, so I save myself the time and just put the wings in the model tight? Are the flaps just for show? What is accurate?

I've started mine quite a long time ago, but never had the opportunity to finish it, due to the lack of skills (I thought)...

Right now I'm busy with some scratchbuilding in the area just behind the wings. Solving out how to replicate these 'bays' in upward position was quite a hard job, but I think it will give just that extra touch if she's finnished.

Image removed due to copyright request by Airliners.net

I've chosen to make her in a parker position, with two of her bomb bays open and the doors of het main gear closed.

I hope to upload some pictures of her soon

I've got a 1:48 Revellogram that's going to become a B-1R AMRAAM truck when I get over its imposing size (My first aircraft with gear down!)

My girlfriend just said something similar. She told me she was going to get to work on my B-1R right after she got over the imposing size. ;)

My B-1B kits have stalled...

The 1/72nd Monogram kit has a problem with the canopy Im having a problem with and the 1/48th one now has a cracked wing and a crack through the fusalage part...

Looks like Ill be needing a second 1/48th kit to "fix" the damages caused by a falling painting.

Anybody built the 1/72nd Monogram B-1B?

Ive been a lurker here in this forum for about 5-6 months now...

I have 2 1/48 scale B-1B Revell kits taking up space in my closet. One of them is just a parts bed, although one will be built gear up and bays open for my school if I ever get around to finishing them.

Ive been looking for the cutting edge nozzles for the B-1B, and Meteor Productions is no longer online...and I was painfully hoping to get ahold of these, and by the time I found out they closed shop, I havent been able to find ANYTHING pertaining to CE turkeyless feather exhaust nozzles. Anyone have ideas? I might be willing to trade away some of my spare bone for replacements, wink wink...I do have eduard exhaust nozzles, but Im not good working on brass, and its a PITA to even get them perfectly round.

Sometime soon, I will be purchasing some JDAMs, CBU munitions, and if I can find any, some Tomohawks for my bone...I have 18(?) fully sanded, puttied and primed SRAMs that came with the kits if anyone is interested in the original payload, plus the other 18(?) from my spare parts build that I havent even pulled off the sprues yet.

Hey Utley,

I don't have a line on any CE nozzles, but if you find that you'd like to sell your Eduard set I'd be willing to take them off your hands

BTW - Shawn Hull has some awesome JDAM and CBU sets!

Yeah Shull24 is where I plan on getting my bombs from, as well as some towed array decoys for my bone. I dont know if I can get rid of my eduard set...I got one nozzle about....10% done, and started another, but man...theres over 30 pieces on these brass parts on each nozzle alone. If I cant get a line on some CE nozzles, Im stuck with these. Otherwise I would definately take you up on your offer.

I should have mentioned this in my previous post, but I just remembered now. There has been two or three occasions where I saw a person (both on ARC and on eBay) selling the CE nozzles.

The problem was they were always part of a package deal which included the B-1B kit and TwoBobs or CE decals, etc.... Most of the things we already have in the stash.

They were all actually reasonably priced, but you know how shipping could be with that kit. And if my wife saw another 1/48 B-1B come in the mail......I don't even want to think about it

I got my 2nd B-1 from ebay...Ive looked and looked for CE nozzles on ebay many times. I dont have room for another B-1. Ive already got an A-10, F/A-18E, a MiG-29 9-12 and these 2 bones filling up my "to do" closet. I even talked to Masterpiece Models about making some nozzles. I found someone on ebay selling his with his B-1, but I have no more room for bones. Wish I did, cuz I cant get ahold of new landing gear without having to find new bones. I can take a package with new decals no sweat...Just dont think Ill need em anyways when I paint em european theater cammies.

It wouldnt be such a bad idea, had I known ahead of time the cans fit...and I would have to purchase 2 sets on a model I spent close to 400 bucks so far... thats almost 70 bucks!!
