1/48 Hasegawa Hurricane Mk. I

Recommended Posts

I finished my Hurricane today. I used an Aires cockpit and Eduard flaps. I added hydraulic lines to the landing gear with wire and micro solder. The gunsight "glasss" was replaced with clear sheet.

The camo colors are Model Master enamels, sprated freehand. The landing gear, wheel wells, and flaps are various shades of Alcad. The markings came from the kit, for Ian R. Gleed's Hurricane Mk. I.

Hope you like it, and thanks for letting me share the pics with you !

This is a great little kit, apart from the lower wing/fuselage seam. It runs through the fabric, making cleanup difficult.

Thank you Randy and Greg !

Randy - when you build yours, I'd suggest gluing the nose halves to the fuselage halves, rather than joining the two completed assemblies. It fits a lot better that way. Squadron just released a vac canopy for this kit. I used the kit windscreen and the vac hood.

Glad you like it !

Greg - I noticed that after I posted the pics. I suspect that my photo lights had something to do with that. Running a little heat underneath it will probably fix it.

Thanks again !

Hi Bill,

Great build of the venerable Hurri :bandhead2:

I have the Revell re-box of that kit and it certainly looks mouthwatering in the box.

One Q:Did you use a Vacu canopy? as the kit part is one piece?

Again, lovely work!

Mike

Thanks Mikeew, Menden, Barney, and Lothar !

Mikeew - the canopy is actually a little of both. I cut the kit canopy apart and used the windscreen. I find it difficult to shape some vac windscreens to fit without gaps, and the thicker plastic looks more like the armored glass to me. I used the hood from the Squadron vac.

Barney - how was your lower wing/fuselage bottom seam? This is my third build of this kit, and they've all had a gap through the fabric area. I used some styrene strip to bridge the gap on this one. The Hurri is definately underrepresented, as there are a LOT more Spitfire builds. The Hurricane actually shot down more Axis aircraft than any other type. Looking forward to your pics !

Thanks again everyone ! I'm glad you enjoyed looking at it !

Thank you Sebastijan !

Barney - it's a shame that Hasegawa didn't put that seam at the next panel line forward of the spot they chose. I doubt that it would have lead to assembly problems.

After I stuffed the styrene strip in there, I carved the crests and troughs into it. I then got out the round and half-round files to keep the troughs consistent. You can see it just a little, if you look at it in the right angle.

Still, not a big enough problem to make me want to stop building Hurries !

Thanks again !

Thank you David !

Hasegawa provides decals for the two "darts" behind the nose, as well as the horizontal stripes on the rudder. Not wanting to try and match a decal color, I masked and painted these. The color is Model Master True Blue, lightened with a little white.

Thanks again !
