richy
As i promise for a long time there is a full step by step of that "heavy" work on the GE compartment. I already post some pict but i decided to make a full removable engine instead of just opening the big front engine panel. Lot of pict so, sorry about the heavy loading.... I would like also to apologise for my mistakes, english is not my usual langage. As the kit will be optionnaly show without the engine, i have to rebuild completely the engine compartement. The panel is carefully cutted. There is not so mutch from the original kit in this pict. The back need a litlle bit of surgery, because i will do all the small steel petals at the end of the airframe. So i have to mill both sides on the left (side where engine moves) particularly inside because the engine has a ring before nozzles.
richy
The nozzle, has it’s ring with a double wall that will alow the engine to be fixed to the airframe with a pin You can see why i had to mill so mutch the kit, the ring goes inside and the exhaust has to be at the level of the outside of the jet. The engine has just global colors the vertical wall is completely rebuild.
richy
Big progress on this pict, you can see most of the change by color difference. All thermic protection is made with aluminium foil pressed before on a heavy sand paper. At the back of the plane, this is the back of the stelll petals. The petals of the exterior will be 3mm longer. Before closing the kit, i decided to work on the vents at the end of the lex.
richy
From the top, it looks much better. For the big back pannel, i also show a quick evolution. pict is sometime better than a long explanation.... You can see the hinges system that alows the panel to go outside the plane to rotate correctelly. This system keeps also the panel on position when it is closed. Detailing is not finished yet but on the left you can see that i have «softed» some styrene parts with trichlo. For the front panel the opening is on the other way and goes 130° out. On the hornet, hinges are outside but as my system is inside, it is complicated to find a good solution to open it as wide. I drill a vent that will receive some scratch later. richy
All the big structures are made with «rail shape» styrene pieces pinched in the midle. they will be an aluminium sheet sticked on their top later. This is the scratch of the vent. The panel is finish, it needs only some wires. This is the most complicated part. Adjusting panels to have a good result on closed position. (and no gap) Lot of sanding and puty and milling.....
richy
And, the GE404 has to go inside without broking everything and stay in. The engine is locked on the front by the inlet and on the back by the pin that goes in the ring . Stell petals will be done at the end, because they will be very fragile. A gunze gloss tomcat white plus a light spray of radome color where the engine «heat» the panel.
richy
Her also, some wires have to be added. Little details like decals will put life on it weathering will separate elements. two panels together
richy
Engine compartment painted. Painting in this small room will be hard time... Engine is in it’s compartment. As the engine will move in and out, i can’t make a conection with the big pipe. Front door closed

Massimo Moruzzi
Wonderful job, Richy! And I am impresseed in seeing that you have finished it and you are ready for paintjob... My A-10 will get to this stage, one day, but is currently on hold: I need a couple of "shake and bake" projects before getting back to the magnum opus. Again, it's top-level (aka Pierre-level) modeling what you are doing. Massimo
