I'm sure someone can give a much more technical answer than I can. In essence, it's the same aircraft. By the time the Korean War rolled around, all of the P- designations for aircraft had been done away with, so they were called F-51 toward the end of their service life. I believe it coincides with when the USAAF became the USAF.

The P stood for Pursuit as in P-38, P-47, P-51, etc. When the Air Force became a separate service in Sept 1947, they wanted to get away from most things ARMY, so someone came up with the idea of changing all Pursuit designations to F for fighter. P-51 became F-51 and so on. It is the same airplane with a different designation.
