madmike
or Preamble Welcome everyone! Firsly I would like to thank Thommo and his posting of his marvellous Matchbox Tempest V in critique, which sparked off the suggestion of a Matchbox GB, further discussion with Thommo via PM and email lead to discussion with Steve Filak and suddenly the floodgates opened and the result is what we see here now. My inital expression of interest posting in General Discussion was a runaway success with over 300 responses and a lot of expressions of interest. It seems there is a lot of modellers out there interested in reliving those great days and partaking in building a Matchbox kit. To be fair, a lot of the expressions of interest have come from UK, European and Aussie based modellers, but a lot of keen Matchbox builders hail from other parts of the world as well. Matchbox holds a great deal of nostalgia and collectability in the UK today, so no wonder we have the makings of a popular build here. Full rules and instructions on the group build are listed below. These rules are simple and designed to make the GB as much fun as possible, just like it was back when Matchbox was king of the affordable kits. Thommo and Madmike's Matchbox Group build vision To celebrate the essence of that which is Matchbox. Simple kits that provided many modellers of today with their first experience of building a model kit. Our group build will attempt to capture those carefree and easy days where aftermarket and desires for accuracy and finish were not as important as finishing the kit and displaying it proudly in our bedrooms for all to see. Afterall the next project was waiting to be purchased! With the death of Leslie Smith, co founder of Matchbox (26 May 2005 aged 87), Thommo and I have decided to dedicate the GB to the memory of the man who created the company that gave most of us an introduction into this wonderful hobby. The Group Build's primary purpose though is to pay some homeage to a manufacturer who did produce some great kits of interesting aircraft, some never kitted since. For a lot of us, that means putting away the notion of building a more mainstream detailed kit and putting together a "fun" and uncomplicated build, a most refreshing exercise. The official stuff Start date is October 2005 with closure on the 1st February 2006. 1:72 Aircraft kits only with no aftermarket PE/Resin, aftermarket decals allowed if required. Scratchbuilding to improve a cockpit is fine but there will be no need to go overboard. For those building biplanes, rigging with stretched sprue, invisble thread, fishing line or ezthread is fine. I was using stretched sprue when I was 14 on my Matchbox bipes. What if's are welcomed! Both Thommo and I are the moderators for this group build and as such will make final decisions based on what is and what is not acceptable within these simple rules. It really is straight forward and we doubt there will be any issues. For those who have a concern please feel free to PM or email us for clarification or any questions. Within this forum will be discussion of the group build as it unfolds, general information, links, inprogress threads and galleries of completed entries. Unfortunately, I have no time to create a website (or webspace) and displays of finished entries will be done within the GB forum, in the Completed entries thread. Raffle prizes One of our local Hobbyshops here in Perth has donated two kits for a raffle draw. Breadboard has also generously donated a few more Matchbox kits to the raffle pool. If there are any other people willing to donate to the raffle or could help in increasing the raffle prize pool, then please let Thommo or myself know. A definative list will be posted within the forum once the GB is under way. The Raffle draw is only available to those entries that are completed. Group build banner For those who have joined the GB and wish to add the banner to their signature, instructions are as follows; Go to My Controls. Under the section called personal information, vlick on signature settings and add To put this banner into your signature simple add the following lines to your signature, but replace the { } brackets with < > chevrons. This will centre the banner on the page. Standard version {center} {IMG}http://www.iinet.net.au/~madmike/madness-banner01a.jpg{/IMG} Smaller version {center} {IMG}http://www.iinet.net.au/~madmike/madness-banner01b.jpg{/IMG} The list below is pretty much the definative Matchbox kit listing. These are the only kits allowed in the Group Build. Note that Revell AG has recently re-released some Matchbox kits in their own boxings. The Heinkel He.70 being a classic example.
