mynameismatt
Hello all! Just had a quick question. What type of AIM-9 was the Navy using in '82? All I have are 9B's but Im pretty sure those are too old. thanks! Matt
Murph
AIM-9L or AIM-9H. Regards, Murph
Graham T
Not a huge expert, but as in 1982 the US "rushed" the 9-L model to the RN for use in the Falklands, I would suspect that it was in service with the US forces.
Dave Williams
Probably AIM-9Ls. They had already gone to the Delta model in the early 70's and then the externally similar G/H models until the Lima production started in 1978. Wouldn't be surprised if G/Hs were still being occasionally carried, though, to "use them up".

SCOUT712
The VF-41 Tomcats used AIM-9L's in 1981 to dispatch the libyen Fitters. SCOUT

Julien (UK)
All the RN ones from the Falkland looked white to me. Julien

SCOUT712
I have a picture of two TOMCAT's from VF-84 (Victory 204 ) and VF-41( Fast Eagle 107 ) taken in 1980, when they where prepared for Operation Evening Light ( the aborted Iranian Hostage Rescue attempt <-Operation Eagle Claw ) They are carrying black and red black identification stripes on the right wing. Loaded with 2 white ( with black front part and grey rear stabilizers ) AIM-9L's on each shoulder pylon plus 4 white AIM-7's ( with black wings and gull greyisch radome ) under the fuselage. By the way the door for the refueling probes are removed on both jets as seen during ops over Afghanistan. SCOUT
