oldfartmodeler
Good Morning; Can any readers point out a source for information on the use of the F-100 Super Sabre in the air-to-air fighter role. I have read about a NVAF MiG-17 being shot down by a F-100 early in the air war and was wondering if any information was available regarding this incident and, specifically how the pilots of the "Hun" rated the aircraft in the air-to-air role. Please feel free to comment. TIA Jim
Rapier01
I'm sure in the hands of someone like John Boyd it was quite capable. He earnd his "40-Second" Boyd nickname in that jet.
Murph
Jim, The MiG-17 kill was never confirmed for various reasons. The latest Squadron F-100 In Action has a painting of the jet involved in the incident on the cover. The F-100 started out as an air to air machine, and as it aged took on the air to ground role. In air to air it was competent for the time, but after the first F-105's were lost (under escort by F-100's) it was quickly replaced by the F-4 and other fighters (that had a radar), which more suitable for operations over Vietnam. ThePhantomTwo
I know our pilots did a great job at DACM in the Hun,they waxed many VMFA-333 F-4J's in the summer of 1977 when we pulled a summer camp in Savannah,GA.They nailed our Huns a few times but the total tally was in our favor by a good margin.
