Revell ( ROG) 1/72nd Kits

Recommended Posts

Sometimes at Hobby Lobby, I'll pick up some great buys.. Recently I picked up a ROG P-47D-30 ( kit 04155 ) Which I think is just a great kit, especially for 4 dollars!!! But sometimes some of the Revell stuff is junk! ( Like the SB2C ) What Revell kits would be recomended?

I know it's kind of subjective... but I'm curious what diferent opinions are..

Thanks, Henry

Their 1/72 Fokker DVII, Fokker Triplane and SPAD XIII kits are real good and a great value! I've had a lot of fun with these little beasties. Thier 1/72 "Amerika Bomber" is a nice kit too and turns into a fine model. I think I saw they had a 1/72 He-70 also. It looks to me like re-pop of the old Matchbox kit, and if so, a fun little build. I've got a 1/72 Ju-86 in the stash and it looks like it will be a lot of fun! I've done some dry-fitting and haven't noticed any issues.

Many Revell of Germany props are repops of matchbox kits or older revell kits. I personally like ALL of them, but if you are looking for very modern toolings than here is a brief list of some nice ones

Spitfire Mk Vb (pretty nice!)

Hurricane family (very nice!!!)

Seeadler (big german recon plane)

HE-177 (very nice kit!)

HE-111 (Hasegawa repop)

B-25J (Hasegawa repop)

FW-190A...something or other

P-47 family (very nice kits!)

ME-262 family (very nice kits!!!)

P-51B

There might be more but I can't remember now

Revell re-release a lot of kits by other manufacturers so it's a bit of pot luck.

There are a lot of ex Matchbox and even old Frog kits whilst the B-25, He111 and Mosquito are Hasegawa and many helecopters are Italeri.

For original ROG WW2 kits I would suggest the FW190, Me262, Hurricane (the best out there imho) the P-51 isn't bad (I prefer the Academy) and the P-47 is just fantastic as you say.

However by far one of the best original mould ROG kits of WW2 in this scale is the He177.

The RoG Su-27 Flanker-B kit (#04319) is a re-pop of the Hasegawa kit, minus the photo-etch fret. It comes with a large decal sheet which is worth the price of the kit alone.

(Sorry, it's not a prop, but your post didn't specify.)

That list of newer kits doesn't include the Fokker Dr. I which definetely qualify, it's not more than two years old

Did RoG do a new tool? Revell originally did a series of WWI kits (1/72 scale) back in the mid 1960s, the ones I have seen definitely show their age and are superseded by Eduard and Roden kits. The original batch included:

Albatros DV (I think)

Fokker Dr I

Fokker D VII

Fokker D VIII

Spad XIII

Camel

SE 5A

Sopwith Triplane

RoG did release a completly new 1/72 Fokker Tripe a couple of years ago, about the time Eduard released theirs. SAMI did a comparison build of the two kits and the RoG offering came off somewhat better in their view - including being much cheaper.

I vaguely recalled some mention of a new Dr I , but don't ever remember actually seeing anything about it. Thanks for the clarification.

I have the Roden and Eduard, now to find the new RoG. At least while on sprues, the Eduard Dr I looks better and easier to build then Roden's, but since it costs twice as much ...

Just a word of caution.

In Belgium you can find various Me262 kits of RoG in 1/72.

The new releases are great value for money (especially at Blokker where you can pick them up just below 3 Euros, about 2.5 USD), unless they are in promotion, and you get 20% off.

BUT, I noticed that they have also re-released their OLD Me262 (a single seater) in a new box (the blue one) at the same price.

For the love of a divine entity, I cannot guess why they did it, because it is unbelievably inferior to the new kits, which also includes the single seaters.

The kit can be recognized by having a built and painted model on the boxtop (Grunherz insignia), and not the drawings of the real new series. Incidentally, it is the same model as 25 years ago.

Watch out for this one.

Their P-51B is a superb little kit, and at such a low price as well. Just be careful with the boxing for the Malcom hood version - the canopy is WAYYYYY over size. I'm no rivet counter by any stretch of the imagination, but it is so obviously massively oversize. But other than that, outstanding little kit.

Nev,

while I agree that the P-51B is good value for money (I bought 3 last month for 2.50USD each), I was told (when asking on this forum) that the Academy was still superior, and that the Revell kit still had the same old wing root problems.

Apart from that, I was also told that the Bf109G kits had problems with the positioning of the landing gear.

I haven't compared them to plans yet, but my eye tells me that it is in the same position as the Hasegawa and Fine Molds kits. Still, it is a lovely kit that falls together.

Cheers

Rob

You actually can get Eduard's Fokker triplane in a cheap way: buy it in a Smer box. The Smer Fokker is just Eduard's with out a few of the bells and whistles.

As for RoG stuff, by virtue of their propensity for bulking out their catalog with reissues, they are a mixed bag for quality and one should do their research before buying their kits.

When they are good, they are very good and when they are bad, you want to go over to Germany and give their top executive a slap in the head.

I can't comment too much further than what has already been said here, but I don't think anyone has mentioned their 1/72 F4U-5 Corsair. I've seen it built up very nicely by other modelers who I know are beginers in the hobby, so I'm guessing its also a fairly good deal.

Sadly the -5 Corsair in 1/72nd scale (assuming that is the one you are referring to) is the older Italeri release reboxed. It is a nice looking model on the sprues and builds up really easily. Unfortunately the kit is too short in length around the nose area. Something like a good scale foot, so it is not insubstantial. it also only has the front row of cylinders for the engine.

I dont recomend the Spitfire Mk Vb in 72nd as it has some errors and a major one is the lack of gull wing effect. It's like buying a Saab Vigen that points its nose downwards when stopped. The Fiat G-91 is the best out there but the decal sheet is not complete, you have to paint some tiger-stripes.

Revell has re-released their old mold Me-262? That was quite the rivet farm!

Check the sides of the boxes for "molded in Italia" which would be an Italeri mold. "Molded in Japan" makes it a Hasegawa mold. Both of these would be newer issues. ROG has the Frog mold for the He-111 as well as the Matchbox of same. While they're proffering the Hasegawa kit it's no wonder they didn't rebox one of the others just to keep things confused. There's always going to be some older kits in their line. If you get one, slam it together or pass it on. I bought their recent edition of the Ju-88 for the box art, better pass that along before the Hasegawa kit comes out!

All you can really do is ask the right person if they know what's in the box.
