Pete Wenman
Guys hi Was looking for a photo to inspire some practice sketching, and at the same time Roger Freemans "American Eagles P51 Mustang units of the 8th Air Force"" turned up in the post, with a great photo of "Kid" Hofer in his cockpit. It was too good to resist, and 2/3 hrs work later Image measures 7inches by 5, and WIP Edited February 26, 2006 by Pete Wenman
GreyGhost
Beautiful "Scribbling" Pete !!! Gregg
Pete Wenman
Cheers Gregg Here's the finished piece, insofar, that I'm not going to work on it further. I gave up on the victory markings as I just couldn't get them right. (I owe the Kid several more) I like it enough that I'll scale it up and create a line drawing, use this as "tone sketch" and have a go at painting it. I'm just playing here, and learning as I go Pete
Koen L
Very nice indeed Pete. Looking forward to seeing the oil version coming along.
geedubelyer
That's good work Pete I'll watch the painting with interest.
Pete Wenman
Guys hi I've doubled the size of the sketch and transfered it to a sheet of oil paper, (I went to my local art shop to pick up a couple of canvas's, and then realised I left my wallet at home) Here I've created a tonal study based on my original sketch, and I will now add colour and paint over the top of this. Hence why it is so rough) Pete
moeggo
Pete, Thats awsome! I think you could do a couple of luftwaffe subjectts and use them for prizes in the DotR GB! I be proud to have one of your fine looking prints on my modeling room wall!
Pete Wenman
Guys hi A little colour. I've laid down all the base colours (pretty much), and I've got the face to a stage where I'll leave it alone, as I'm pleased with it, alrthough any resemblance to Ralph Hofer is purely coincidental  and cropped As you can see I'm working on the flight jacket, and Duke at the moment, but I'm pleased enough with progress to keep going. Sorry about the lighting, I'll take some better photos in daylight at the weekend Pete Edited March 16, 2006 by Pete Wenman
Sav
Hi Pete, This is looking good, i'll be to watch the progress on this for sure. Sav.
Pete Wenman
A little more work, and better light The jacket is nearly complete, and the sky has been reworked, its now lighter with a hint of yellow/green, which has reduced the blue, and I hope hints a low sun. Choosing to do a backlight subject was, in hindsight, a bit more of a challenge than I had in mind. I have to keep toning down the highlights, while avoiding everything just being in silhouette Duke next Pete
mudrat
Pete, This is shaping up really nice. It's a real treat watching things develop. Regards, Stephen
Pete Wenman
Stephen thanks for the kind words, if I end up half as good as you and Wade, then I'll be very happy More progress Getting more comfortable with the paint. Pretty much finished Duke, although the left paw is not right. I need to think about the reflections in the Malcolm hood , and how to show that two layers of glass panels are being looked through Pete
Pete Wenman
After a fair amount of paint going down (and being wiped off again) I've finally made some progress. More work required on the detail, and I'm not really happy with the glare/reflected light on the Malcolm hood, but its the best ive acheived so far Pete Edited April 8, 2006 by Pete Wenman
Pete Wenman
A little more progress, helped by the purchase of a drawing board on ebay to act as an easel As you can see still wet, and still struggling to take a decent photo. I have reworked the canopy reflections and I feel I'm getting there, although still work to do. I have also extended the piece down and quite like the square shape Pete Edited April 15, 2006 by Pete Wenman
Col.
That's coming along nicely Pete, like the detail around the canopy.
Pete Wenman
some more (slow) progress. The malcolm hood reflections are now finished and I'm pleased with the result. Detail and the face re worked, and I should be done Pete
