Oblt. Joachim Schypek had been advised by the JG54 operations officer that he would not be flying this day. Disregarding these instructions, he ran out to his aircraft, Black 7, WNr.1988, and departed on a mission to escort bombers to London. He should have listened to the ops. officer. In the vicinity of Biggin Hill he was seperated from his group and attacked by appoximately ten Spitfires. He evaded several but F/O M.P. Brown of 41 Sqn. flying a Spitfire Mk.1, X4253, latched onto his tail and fired several rounds into the Bf 109s fuselage and radiator. Oblt. Schypek who had four victories up to that point (a Curtis, two Spitfires and a Blenheim) spend the rest of the war in a prisoner of war camp.

I'd again like to thank the moderators for a great group build. I must say I learned a lot about the Battle of Britain and the work that was displayed here was simply amazing.

Doc, if you can pull the photos from this thread for the gallery I'd appreciate it. If you need me to email the photos to you directly just let me know and I'll get that done tomorrow.

David;

Both A/C are fabulous! I especially like what you did with the paintwork on the Spitty. The fading just gives it that extra touch of realism. I really enjoyed following your builds! Thanks for sharing. Oh, and as an aside, I would count Herr. Schypek among the lucky, as he lived out the remainder of the war and was able to return home and resume a life. Had he not been shot down that day, I wonder if he would have been as fortunate on another day, as so many other Luftwaffe pilots faced ever higher odds against life expectancy as the war progressed. Just a thought, eh? :worship:

:thumbsup:

J.C.

David hi

Both are great builds, and show very different types of paintwork

(and skills req'd to achieve)

I also love the historical connection, and I can't think

of another GB that has had so much history so readliy on show

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I think what I enjoyed the most about this project was the research. Originally I was only going to do the Bf 109E but through the help of many people on this board and a couple of others was able to find out quite a lot about 41 Sqn.

And Jamie as I was posting last night the same thing you mentioned hit me: Oblt. Schypek was definitely one of the lucky ones for getting shot down when he did and surviving as many others did not.
