Hasegawa 1/72 Tornado kits

Recommended Posts

Could anybody please tell me what the differences between Hasegawa's GRMk1 and Tornado IDS kits are? ( HE00775 ) Is the IDS the same ( plastic wise ) as the MK3 (HE00740)?

Thanks, Henry

The basic airplanes are the same, except for the decals. It's been awhile, but I THINK (won't say for certain) that there are some different sprues for things like weapons, the GR.1 in its original box had the JP233 dispensers, one of the German boxings had the MW-1 dispenser (I thin that's the designation, the big belly-mounted thing that ejected submunitions out the sides), another included Kormoran missiles I believe, and I think there were alternate ECM pods for under the wings for each version but I may be OTL on the ECM bit. If you've got alternate decals you can build the RAF version from an IDS kit and vice-versa except for the weapons/ECM pods as the clear sprue is common to both and contains the undernose sensor fairing of the GR.1.

As Simon mentioned, the Revell Tornado is better in detail and less expensive than the Hasegawa, but is a bit more difficult to build as the main gear is tricky to get installed and aligned as each strut is made up of 3 or 4 pieces vs. a single piece for Hasegawa's version. There are those who say that the Revell nose is too skinny/pointed and the Hasegawa nose is too fat/blunt. I've built both and can live with both (I have at least 1 more of each to build and will happily do so). The Revell GR.1 is probably the best value, as it has the RAF unique bits as well as all the stuff from the original IDS release so you can do either an RAF, Saudi, German or Italian GR.1 or IDS, as long as you've got the decals. The GR.1 box includes British 1000lb bombs, 1000lb Laser-guided bombs, ALARM missiles, and I think the larger underwing tanks in addition to the German boxing's smaller tanks, ARS pod and Recce pod.

Hi Henry - additionally the wings and tailplanes are the same plastic, but the fuselage and nose section is of course very different. The F3 is a totally differnt aircraft than the GR or IDS version.

The Hasegawa GR/IDS kit was probably the best Tonka around - until Revell's GR1/IDS/ECR was issued...the latter's in a different league altogether!!!

One last thing you should know: the nose of Revells Tonka is a lil botched in they way that it is too pointy and doesnt have the distinctive shape of a Tornado nose. When I read this first I was thinking to myself: " WTH No, not another stupid rivet counter again, the Revell kit is perfect!!!"

Then I was looking at it myself and I had to admit he was right :-(((

Anybody knows where to get a nosecone? I know theres the Flightpath set around but I dont want the whole lot of other things let alone the price. I think the kit really needs a new nose as the Tonkas nose is very characteristic .

Sorry for crashing your party :-)

Does anybody know if theres an alternative or correction kit?

Best regards,

Till
