Unfortunately Bodie's book on the P-47 - From Seversky to Victory - has some coverage on the P-43, but I couldn't find anything specific to your question. In addition during the WWII era the 'R' designation meant 'Restricted' not 'Reconnaissance'. The restricted designation would be assigned when the aircraft was deemed unfit for deployment/use in a combat zone.
