Ollie T-Y
I was just mixing 2 Tamiya Acrylics (Black And white flat) to make the grey used on phoenix missles, and when i began to handbrush it, it started going all gritty and horrible, as if id just sanded and painted straight over, which btw, i hadn't. Anyone know why?
The Migrant
I'm guessing that one or both of the paints wasn't properly mixed. I've never had much luck brushing Tamiya acrylics anyway, although they airbrush superbly. Vallejo acrylics in the little bottles, or Games Workshop acrylics, are much better (smoother, more opaque) for hand brushing.
Old Blind Dog
Tamiya acrylics tend to separate (pigment from carrier) very easily and have to be stirred a lot to maintain cohesion. Were both bottles new with no thinner or other substance added? Or was one bottle slightly "older" than the other, perhaps having been thinned or "infected" with some other substance (ie dried pigments or clumped carrier)? What type of thinner did you use? I've found that Tamiya X-20 A acylic thinner is excellent and makes Tamiya acrylics VERY hand-brush friendly (but again, you have to take care to keep the paints properly mixed up). Isopropyl also works well, water less so; but for hand-brushing, some type of thinning is necessary for a smooth, even finish. Just some points to consider Cheers Old Blind Dog
Ollie T-Y
ahhhh that may be the problem I belive that the black has got a tiny amount of water in it, and the white doesnt. Doh!!! I may just go and buy a whole load of new paints, i think its necessary. I was looking at my piants and i realised i only have about 15!!!!!
