Air National Guard to continue Terre Haute operations

Associated Press

TERRE HAUTE — The Air National Guard operations at the city’s airport have gained new life with the military’s decision to establish two support units there with up to 420 staffers.

Initially, the federal base closing commission had announced last August that the nine F-16 fighter jets flown by the Terre Haute-based 181st Fighter Wing would go to the Air Guard unit at Fort Wayne.

The latest information is that the F-16s will go to Atlantic City, N.J., according to Capt. Jim Jensen, public affairs officer for the 181st.

Members of the 181st will be converted to the new units, the largest of which is to be the Distributed Common Ground Station. That unit will have about 350 people working to provide real-time imagery, electronic information and intelligence analysis to battlefield commanders, the Indiana National Guard said.

The other new unit — an Air Support Operation Squadron — will have about 70 people in an assignment to coordinate aircraft support for combat troops.

This is great news for the Terre Haute economy, but first and foremost for our national defense,†Gov. Mitch Daniels said. “This confirms that our message got through that we have a great facility and an outstanding Air Guard.â€

Timing for the transition and training will be determined by the Indiana National Guard, the Air Force and the National Guard Bureau.
