1:48 B-47E Stratojet progress

Recommended Posts

This morning I was mainly working on the starboard wing flap well structure.

I marked the ribbing on a sheet of plastic card and drilled out the holes in the card before I cut them out - it is easier to drill the holes at this satge and the plastic is less likely to tear during the process.

I cemented flat plastic card strips inside the flap well to set the positions for the ribs, which were then glued in place. Additional strips were then added to complete the job.

Next...back to the cockpit.

You're not building this kit you are engineering it. Are you working from drawings to get this detail?

I'm using photos and drawings in the book "Boeing's B-47 Stratojet" by Alwyn T Lloyd as reference for constructing the flap wells. It's an excellent book - well recommended.

UNBELIEVABLE Darius!!!.............your work is simply brilliant.

To do one of those seats is great work, but two is just awesome.Cockpit is looking fantastic, as is the wing detail you added.

Love your work,

Jeff.

Great stuff Darius.

Watching your scratch building is inspirational. I'm fascinated to see how you manage to construct the various shapes by building up "layers" of detail.

A coat of paint is going to make this cockpit look even more awesome.

Any chance of putting something next to the parts to give a sense of scale?

(A pound coin or something........?)

I started the main instrument panels this morning. Sanger provide printed panels on glossy paper that are reasonably representative of the actual panels (at least the ones that I have pictures of). I copied the sanger panels using the B&W copy funtion of my printer and cemented the paper copies to some plastic card. Once dry I drilled out the instrument faces using a pin vice and suitable small diameter drill bits.

The drilled plastic panels were cleaned up and used as overlays to the Sanger printed panels (a bit like photoetched panels). So far so good...

Unfortunatley the completed panels did not excatly (i.e not at all) fit into the fuselage so I had to cut them down a bit. Fortunately the offcuts could be used for the cockpit side consoles.

The cockpit was brush painted Humbrol US Green (H117) and Matt Black (H33) with switches picked out in silver.

I'm glad you have an American penny, becasue I have no idea how big a Pound coin is!!! I'll be happy if my Stratojet comes out HALF this good. Are you going to get one of Gerald's B-52s?

Have the fuselage halves been glued?

Not yet - I still have to drill/cut out the small windows in the nose. This week-end I will be visiting my Mum in Belfast so work on the B-47 will be held up untill the following week-end.

Does that mean you'll install a fully detailed navigator's station? :) Enjoy the weekend.
