Cromate yellow for cockpit and wheel wells... P-51B ..... Cromate green for cockpit.... Cromate green or yellow for wheel wells... P-51C ..... Cromate green for cockpit.... Milo
Hi HGE, I'm no Mustang expert by any stretch of the imagination but from what I understand, the b,c & d all had silver lacquered wheel wells and it was the main spar in the rear of the well that was zinc chromate. At least that's how I've done my mustangs and I have seen a picture of a P-51B like that. I'm sure others know more... Murph
Henry, You might find the following useful http://www.ipmsstockholm.org/magazine/2004...rs_us_part2.htm Some generaliztions of the "current wisdom" are that the cockpits were probably either dull dark green or interior green (basically chromate green) for the majority of the production run. The cockpits of Korena era Mustangs were evidently repainted black. The wheel wells were most typically unpainted natural metal with the main wing spar (the rear of the main gear wells) oainted in zinc chromate yellow. Those generalizations are most applicable to the B through D models. Regards, Murph
Slartibartfast
Mustang cockpits never had chromate yellow, they were all chromate green/interior green (same, only different). As Murph noted, the refurbishment of ANG birds for Korea saw them get black cockpits, as did pretty much all USAF aircraft in that period.

Thanks, Henry P-51A: Cockpit was in dull dark green, wheel wells in aluminium lacquer (over primer coats of YZC). P-51B/C/D: Cockpit initially in DDG, later in interior green, when the change occured seems uncertain but most likely during the D production run. P-51B/C/D: Wheel wells unpainted initially, to avoid galvanic corrosion certain parts were painted YZC. Usually this was the wing spar, but there are cases of the wing spar being unpainted and the aluminium sheets attached to the spar in YZC. There was *never* a case of the wheel well in aluminium lacquer with the spar in YZC. Later corrosion problems led to the whole well being painted, there are photos of P-51D's with all YZC wheel wells. There have been reports of all interior green wheel wells but I have not seen a photo of this. Anders
