1/72 PM model Ta-183 in progress

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I'm rather new on this forum and i haven't had the chance to post some of my work while in progress, so here goes. This PM kit is rather basic and is really nice to work on it to get some better detailing. I addes several bits and pieces, the white stuff is thin cardboard. I replaced the cockpit for an old revell Fw-190 one, fits nicely. Also the air intake and the exhaust got some piping to get them to look more convincing. The bomb bay is a bit too short, i'm thinking of redoing it with extra length so a droptank would fit into it.

Cheers

Looks great. I used a generic resin cockpit in mine, but using a Fw tub makes a lot of sense. The wheelwells look good. I went real simple, I just added another strut or two in each main well, and then mounted the doors hanging in really tight. "German Aircraft Landing Gear" (aka "Wheelwells of the Aces") shows them in fairly close - for anyone else looking to do this, I would say to have them no further open than what's shown here.

Really good so far, I used a late Fw.190 resin cockpit on mine to spruce up the front office a bit. I also used a short length of aluminum tubing for the exhaust nozzle. The othe rthing I did was shorten the main undercarriage as they are a bit too long, the aircraft should squat down at the back, according to David Myhra's book on the Ta.183.

Other than that I built mostly OOB. here's some photos of mine if you'd like to look.

Hi guys

Thanks for the nice responses, i'll sure keep you all posted on the progress.

Llarry, they have a book on wheelwells? How..uh...specialised  I was thinking about making them sit a bit more tighter but then it did look kinda ridiculous as the landing gear could have barely sqeezed itself out of the belly.

Robert, good tip on the landinggear, i spotted the problem today as i was test fitting the main wheels. Where did you add the alu tubing, should the cone within the exhaust as provided in the kit be hollow?

Did lengthen the bomb bay by the way, it was an easy thing to do and it made me much happier with the way i could add a drop tank. Pics later!

Cheers

Hi Jochem,

If you lool at the link to my photos and then click through to the third and seventh photo you can see where I had carefully profiled the thick exhaust opening and then pushed in a piece of tubing to give a more realistic look to the exhaust casing. I used the original kit exhaust cone and glued it with superglue to the aluminum tube before I set it in the fuselage.

My paint job was a bit of an experiment, which was half OK, It was the first time I had used a different method to do the mottleing.

 Robert

Ah ok, i think i misread your earlier post. The outer exhaust ring does look a lot better indeed than the original exhaust looks like. Hmm, i might be tempted to redo the exhaust some more on my kit.

As for the mottling, it does look somewhat rough but i figure you don't use an airbrush. A small thing i did spot is a small gap between the canopy and the hull at the rear.

cheers

"German Aircraft Landing Gear" by Gunther Sengfelder. It's a great reference to have. For just about every plane Germany built, and a number that didn't get past design/mockup, there's a couple of pages with photos and drawings. Great for getting alignment right, also which tire size the plane used, and which parts should be painted and which were left bare. For those working in larger scales, you can see exactly where the brake lines went.

Plus you get great funny looks from people...

This one's gonna be nice!

Is this the same kit that was released by Revell some 10 years ago? I remember building that one. Was one of my first completely built + painted + decalled bird. Sadly, it didn't survive moving from Kenya back to Germany....

Hey guys

A small update on the work i've done:

ta183a09.jpg

extended the bombbay, droptank now fits. Added the racks for the air to air missiles you get with some Me-262 kits.

ta183a10.jpg

Painting the cockpit, almost ready to attacht the canopy.

ChernayaAkula; don't know...never seen the revell offering except for the box-art.

gooberliberation; hmm...might do something with the wings as they lack real surface detail.

Cheers

Nice work so far. Keep it up.

I did, and here are some pics of the camouflage. No fancy coloured aircraft this time, i'll try to make up for it with some interesting weathering and decals. The canopy still needs to be cleaned and painted.
