1/20 F-16 - A scratch build project

Short update -

While work on the fuselage parts are still in progress (a long process…) i'm also making mini-builds. Here is one of them, it is a crew chief figure. It is one of the figures that I'm planning to make for the diorama and this is the first time I'm making a figure from scratch and it is a whole new world and a challenging one.

Still need to add a few little things (tag name, shoelaces etc). Here it is in its current state, next step will be painting it -

New update -

During building and forming the fuselage I came to a stage that I need to see the alignment of the parts so I made a simple assembly jig that will help me in this process -

I started to work on the GBU-31 JDAM. The work process on the bomb body is similar to what I did with the fuel tank, here are the steps in a picture -

003-18.jpg

Most of the bomb 'Jacket' is done. The tamiya GBU-31 have the marked area with different shape than what I seen in picture of the real bomb so I changed it to a kind of triangle instead of a series of circles -

Thank you guys :)

New update -

Working on the JDAM had me facing with a big problem, details ahead . . .

From the last update i given a circular shape to the 'jacket' parts and added few other items of the bomb, some of them are different from the tamiya bomb:

(1) On tamiya part the right side is the same as the left side but according to photos I've seen of the real bomb it is different, so I changed its shape.

(2) This part was added according to photos (in tamiya it doesn't exist at all)

Made a bomb stand to keep the bomb safe while it is on the ground (remember the safety guys :cop: . . . )

Ok, here is the problem. I used a thin plastic to do the 'jacket' but when it was glued to the bomb its shape was not constant as you can see in this photos –

005-8.jpg

And the gluing process is a bit tricky when using cyno glue so I'm switching to plan B which is to use a self adhesive metal foil and see how it goes :salute:.

Here the bomb compared to the tamiya part –

Regevmo,

I have an idea on your JDAM problem. Why not toss the styrene "jacket" parts you have made, and make a reverse mask onto the tank that you could slowly build up relief detail using rattle can primer?

You would need to reverse mask the tank with the outline of the styrene parts you have made. Using thickish primer you could build up as much thickness as you want (at least as much as the scale thickness). The paint will conform to the tanks radius and look better than the styrene technique. You then can add the styrene strakes to the sides.

Make sense?

my idea would be to just use one thick piece of masting tape around it, trim it so its level all around, then trim out all the various shapes and what not.

or you could take it off and cut out the shapes.

simple...

:crying2:

Hi richard, I'm still working on the JDAM. First i had to remove the cyno glue from the previous attempt and now i'm painting the bomb again and need to add the rust effects. When it will be finished i will update with pictures.

New update -

More work was done on the main parts. There are 3 parts for the lower area of the fuselage (engine bay, intake & forward part under the cockpit). They were built in such a way that I could work on the interior area in a more convenient way –

001-28.jpg

All parts are temporarily connected with screws and connection pins (that helps during the sanding phase to "blend" each part to the other) –

And a comparison to the Tamiya viper –

003-22.jpg

More work on these parts will be some shape correction (with measures checked again) and smoothing the parts area using the method I did on the JDAM\Fuel tank.

Finished the crew-chief, next figure will be a USAF pilot and all that was learned from my first scratchbuild figure will be implemented in the pilot build –

wow hes pretty cool!!

all is look good so far! i cant wait to see you start on the cockpit!!

pay i suggest you get the italeri 1/12 model of the cockpit for a good basis on shape (although im not sure if its easier to scale down rather than up)

You know what will happens if i get the italeri 1/12 cockpit, i eventually will end up building an aircraft around it so i better not
