witnessed a truly historic event yesterday

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Wanted to let you all know about the helicopter handover ceremony I attended yesterday. I did take pics, but I'm on my bb, so I'll post them later.

The event was historic because not only was it the first HH-60M delivered, but it was the first time a new-production aircraft of a brand new variant was delivered, not to the Active Duty, but to the National Guard. The first Mike model Medevac unit will be in VT and they will have all of their birds by the end of the year.

Truly a historic event, and a long time coming. Heck, I might even want to fly one! Shhhh don't tell anyone!

Oh, and yes...

I shot a full walkaround of it too.

the first C-130H model was delivered to the OK ANG waaay back in the early 80s. The Army NG just may finally be getting with the program!

YEEEEEESSSSS!!! We finally converted Jon over into wanting to fly a REAL helicopter. One that doesn't have a pull-along string attached to it.Can't wait for those cool pics Bro!

Just because I like the mission doesn't mean I want to fly the aircraft. If I weren't flying a far superior aircraft, I'd be flying Medevac Hawks.

The HH-60M is an impressive bird. Lots of similarities in MPD architecture, except for some reason, even though it doesn't have backup instruments, it is still IFR rated, while the AH-64D is not... Can't wait until we get those VOR receivers on the Longbow... that'll make life SO much easier!

In any case, I apologize for my failing to acknowledge the Air Guard's receipt of the first C-130H. The Army is finally realizing that the Guard makes nearly half of its manpower and it is about time that we get the same equipment considerations. The fielding of several new HH-60M units to the Guard before the Active is that first major step.

Two questions: Do the Guard units get the full ECM fit on these choppers or only if they deploy? Since it has a hoist and a FLIR, are they capable of SAR?

It is nice to see the new craft going to the Guard units.

They are fully combat capable, with all of the latest countermeasures. The Blackhawk does not have an onboard ECM suite. There is no difference between an Active/Guard/Reserve helicopter.

The crewchiefs sits in the back of the bird that is why the window has the bubble in it.

Interesting they do not have the crew chief windows/doors?

Pictures look good  cool new rotors too.

Can't wait for that bird to get dirty, way too clean!

No MEDEVAC bird has weapons other than personnal weapons for the crew it is against the Geneva Convention, but we always fly with a armed escort or sometimes two of them, I flew with AH-1W Cobra's from HLMA-773 and AH-64D's from 2/6 CAV in Afghanistan as our escorts.

That raises a question - are medevac's in Iraq / Afghanistan flying armed? I would hope so since I really don't think those big red crosses would stop any of the bad guys from taking shots at them.
