Stop "gossip" and back to the Mig.......

I step up to the wings.......and at frist I paint and details wheel bay

Mig-21MF__1199_.jpg

But flaps and ailerons nedd to be very thin, so I cut away lot of plastic from it....

Mig-21MF__1196_.jpg

I check by dryfit that wings join to the fuselage perfectly, but small surprise wait for me, underwing surface absolutely don't fit well, there is a at list 0,5mm space.....look!

I solve the problem in the more easy way I know.....putting a evergreen barrel between the gap.

Mig-21MF__1207_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1206_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1208_.jpg

Later I will glue together, but first a small detail more realistic by palsticard

Mig-21MF__1220_.jpg

And finally the Mig is totally visibile.....

He he he my friends, you discover the secret!!! All work is done by Calimero.......I am just a poor assistant :woot.gif:

Usually I like to spry primer on the model to check possible missing finishing problem.......

Mig-21MF__1237_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1238_.jpg

in fact......I found panel lines disappear.................

Mig-21MF__1239_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1240_.jpg

..............also I forget to sand one joint....

Mig-21MF__1241_.jpg

.......wing and fuselage joint problem.....

Mig-21MF__1242_.jpg

So, that's why I like primer, but more work needed now to fix that problem....

We can "jump" now to the painting session......starting from the metallic part. Normally I prefer to paint all metallic surfaces in advance, in this case I spry "burnt metal" Testor Metalizer on the air inlet ring.

Mig-21MF__1247_.jpg

On the exhaust I used Alcald aluminium as a base also on the afterburner....

Mig-21MF__1248_.jpg

then cover zones I don' want to change again.....

Mig-21MF__1250_.jpg

...and I "play" with Alclad "copper" "pale burnt metal" "jet exhasut" to give different shadows between burnt dark area and lighter zones....

Mig-21MF__1251_.jpg

By oily paint I dirt the panel lines and create small dirty stripes.....

Mig-21MF__1252_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1253_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1254_.jpg

later I try a new and courageous technique......by small tamper just humid by nitro solvent I "played" carefully, in order to remove random the dark esternal paint and let the aluminium came up again.

Mig-21MF__1255_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1256_.jpg

I confess I was swetting during this exercise......I was scare to destroy painting work just done....but I was lucky.

Mig-21MF__1257_.jpg

Probably I will retouch again at the end of painting job, to see the effect in the whole finishing context.

Now is the preshading time......I like to use different preshading color in this case for the undesurfaces respect upper.

For the undersurfaces the main color will be an RLM76 grey/azur, so I like to use similar but darker tone, in particular, very dark blue nigth from Gunze.

The mixing I use is about 80% solvent (Gunze) 20% color and spry between 0.8 and 1.0 bar (atmosphere) by freehand.....

Mig-21MF__1266_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1265_.jpg

Mig-21MF__1267_.jpg

That's all for today.....I will be back when the upper surface preshading will be done.

Ciao to everybody and happy modelling.

Good stuff Davide! I had to redo almost the same joints as you. I like your style of pre-shading. I think you manage to get it just right, and not like a chess board! Do you use Gunze Acrylics or Lacquer?

Your landing gears are so very nice! This will be one very good looking Iraqi -21!

Thank you Martin,

as I usally did on my other models (F-16 NASWC for example) I adopted my "standard" tecnique to paint also on this Mig.

First step; gray primer as you did on your Mig, second; preshading by Acqueous Gunze or Acylics Tamiya, third; base color camouflage by Enamels Lacquer (only gloss) by Xtracolor and before this layer dry I apply base color more lightened around very random, to avoid the "chess board" I ate it!!

Since Lacquer need several hours to be dry I realize that if I apply ligthened base color just immediately, all layers blend together creating very nice shadow between the base and light zones. At the end I get a very shine surfaces where apply directly decals and washing avoiding transaprent glossy step of painting, that's another reason why I choose Laquer instead Acrylics.

In the past I used lot Vinylic and Acryilic paint, ad also was nice, but with Laquer I get the better effect I look for.

Bye

Among other things, one that impresses me of your builds is when you show pics of your pre-shading jobs: it´s amazing how precise, consistent, uniform, straight and precise it is! Really incredible.

Hello Davide,

Lacquers are probably the best colors to paint with. The only reason I avoid them is the smell and long drying time! :woot.gif: But lacquers airbrush better than acrylics. Gunzes acrylics are in my opinion the acrylic colors that has the greatest similarity in characteristics to lacquers.

Hi ARC'ers,

also upper surfaces done by preshading. I use very dark brown mixing Gunze Acrylics Mahogany and Black....that's all.

Mig-21NF1268.jpg

You can see better the different color between the upper preshading and the lower...

Mig-21NF1269.jpg

I hope soon to start with Xtracolor laquer, stay tuned.
