  1. 1. Would you stretch this Academy Flanker to proper length, if you could?

    • Yes, I want an accurate model in scale
      80
    • No, it's a small error - only 3.5% in length
      129

Hmm... Your mother helps you modeling?! You (I mean you and your mother) 're rockin' on modeling contests - I guess ... Like Batman & Robin ...

Why do you need me, then?

I moved out almost three years ago now, but when I used to live with my parents, my mum would sort of take over anytime she heard a plastic aircraft model crash against my bedroom walls. Sometimes I've started scratchbuildin' 'til I didn't know how to either put every thing back together or make pieces fit. There have been other times I thought the models I had given up on were long gone, and my mum saved them to suggest solutions to me. She's got a lotta passion 'n' patience as well, so in a way, she's put her ideas across to me, I guess. I'm really a short fused bloke. I suppose this would make my mum Batman and smiley35.gif "Ooooohhh, nooooo...!!!" to me, aye?

So, in other words; the reason me needs ya is because it's tough to explain the obstacles I come across on my builds to my mum over the phone. nuts.gif I don't see her start an account on a modellin' forum either.

And then even if I managed to make a descent cut, neither cockpit nor front wheelbay would be in accordance to the drawings...

Yeh, me told my mum that adding 2mm where she proposed would do nuthin' but enlarge the area covered by the canopy, but then she noticed me that the substraction of those 2mm anywhere right forward from where the Aires cockpit ends would make up for that difference. Cunning bloody fox, me thought... tongue2.gif

So, now I have two possibilities: to push this built and finish it in time, but as Eritrean 608/609 splinter - What do you think?

(Mum) and I say, push it, yeh, but not rush it, awlright? ;)

Anyway, tonight I'm supporting Argentina in match vs. Greece ! Match starts in 5 mins ... Oh, by the way, I have Master degree in aerospace engineering (MAE) from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture (FSB Zagreb)

Ooohh, "sucker" soccer, y'know... it ain't that I don't support my country on the FIFA 2010 World Cup; it's just I would prefer my country did better at rugby instead. Every thing down here is damned soccer, y'know; I'm really fed up with it. I wish our national rugby representative, Los Pumas, got nearly the same support Argie soccer enthusiast give to Diego Maradona's team. I've played rugby since I was a five-year-old lad, so I don't even start gettin' whut soccer is all 'bout. Anyways, I'm happy Martín Palermo scored a goal and that we won.

Nice! I figured yer scratchbuildin' skills oughta have to do with yer studies or with whut ya did for a livin,' perhaps? Incidentally, my mum's divorced from my dad, and she's still young; she'll be 46 in August. Her mates say she's got a juicy rump, but as her son, ya well understand that's sumthin' I wouldn't dare confirm for ya; so sorray, bloke. Hey, perhaps I might trade a picture of my mum's tiny thong-clad rear in exchange for yer Flanker plans, tho. Deal?

I've penetrated into the cockpit while removing excess resin ... But it won't be visible, once K-36 seat is in place ... Only the pilot will have natural aircon ... Or something like McLaren F1 drivers do with their knees to boost back spoiler performance ... Aires tube is visible from front wheelbay, but it will be covered with the battery niche

;) Uh-huh...? That's exactly whut I first thought 'bout doin,' but in the picture we edited it looked as if the height of the wheelbay were going to protrude into the cockpit much higher than the seat pan. Besides of the fact that ya yerself said thinnnin' the Aires cockpit any further was not an option.

Greece - Argentina 0:2 Just finished !

Yeh, Periklis Sale; yeh...!!! In yer face!

Have a nice trip back home, chaps! Hahahahahaha... (me is jokin,' awlright?) Or NOT?

Cheers, mate!

:woo: Keep your mother's but for yourself, but we could have a good trade if you have sister in your spare parts box - in 1:1 scale, maybe? <_<

I mean from real flesh and blood, and not plastic or resin...

As you can see, drawings are out there, so I'll give you my home address, so you can send her via airmail ASAP ... :jaw-dropping:

Okay, before my "modeller pimp" role takes over, let me tell ya how impressive yer model is comin' along, supergru, mate. Few times did I see this level of scratchbuildin,' involving so many cuts and modifications; sincerely. I see ya've sorted the issue on the wheelbay area fine. :bandhead2:

One of my favourite threads on this forum, ever. Keep it up, chap!

Keep your mother's but for yourself

:cheers:Bloke...!!! Ya just don't know whut ya're missin.' My mum was first runner up in the 1995 edition of the Reef Bikini Contest in Rio de Janeiro.

but we could have a good trade if you have sister in your spare parts box - in 1:1 scale, maybe?

Oh? Me's got two.

I mean from real flesh and blood, and not plastic or resin...

Well, just let me check first whether they're not actually made of inflatable latex, y'know. <_<

As you can see, drawings are out there, so I'll give you my home address, so you can send her via airmail ASAP ...

Awlright; deal. Want me to send my sis via FedEx or just priority mail?

Cheers, mate!

@Uncle Uncool: I'll get to you via email ASAP. Sorry, I'm busy modeling!

Some progress over the weekend ...

I started filling seams with Tamiya Epoxy Putty, but I had no success. That thing sticked to everything (fingers, knife, handgloves..) but model - although I sanded it with 400 grid, as per instructions - wet finger didn't help either - I just don't know ow to work with it.... So I went back to Tamiya White Putty ...

IMG_8105.jpg

I started with .. Hydraulic oil tank, maybe? Some hours later it looked like this .. Front wheelbay cover finished (lacks one tiny detail)

IMG_8100.jpg

I drilled holes for hatches and cables ... Actuator has proper length, since its hole in wheelbay hasn't been drilled (yet)

IMG_8113_2.jpg

I also added some details to middle section, like chamfed sidewalls, hook, springs and a small cylinder. On this picture it seems like there's 2 pounds of glue, but let me assure you, it's just 'cause of artificial light ...

IMG_8131_2.jpg

Next day I started sanding putty down. Started with wings, then lower fuselage ... Here came that epoxy thing in the way - stone hard - used file edge to carefully remove it ...

IMG_8133_2.jpg

Some details after lower half was finished ...

IMG_8138.jpg

IMG_8140.jpg

IMG_8141.jpg

IMG_8143.jpg

I also started with upper half ...

Yesterday second Academy Flanker came... I wanted Russian Knights issue, but what the heck ...

IMG_8161.jpg

Wing-to-wing comparison ... I'm happy with the chopping results ...

Some more shoots ...

Hi there, T-mate! Oh, ne'er mind; yer build's got priority here. Comin' along impressively! I've started droolin' while watchin' at the results of the massacre - kinda gruesome; I know, but it's really happenin' to me. Me's completely lost for words regardin' yer job, bloke. :worship: ('n' I ain't too keen on polishin' anyone's knobs, sincerely).

Yesterday second Academy Flanker came... I wanted Russian Knights issue, but what the heck ...

 Geez! Another one? Plannin' on givin' the T-treatment to this kit too, are ya...?

Wing-to-wing comparison ... I'm happy with the chopping results ...

I concur! It's a good thing I voted YEA, cause the difference is quite noticeable. I didn't even know Academy's Su-27 was so undersized before stumblin' upon yer awesome thread. Me really doesn't get NAY would be winnin' the poll, but I've learnt a lot outa this thread.

Keep it up, mate! Take yer time 'bout e-mailin' me, don't worry 'cause I understand. ;)

Cheers,

Another one? Plannin' on givin' the T-treatment to this kit too, are ya...?

Well... You know exactly to whom would I gave a treatment in the moment of speaking... Erg... writing ... Teaser! OK, not this kind of treatment, but xou get the picture ... :)

And yes, that Academy Flanker will have a similar building process, but it will have 2 major differences ... But that's a future story ...

Back to this weekend update...

2nd coat of filler was applied ...

DSC01805.jpg

... and sanded down ...

DSC01808.jpg

Next were intakes ... They shrink and wrap... I don't know ... This ...

DSC01810.jpg

... should be this ... Now don't mind decimals 'cause I used digital caliper to be able to measure and stretch intake with one hand and to snap a shot with the other one ...

DSC01812.jpg

The other problem I had was this .. When I cut intake again, and aligned its parts to referent planes, I got some gaps ...

DSC01813.jpg

Intake was glued with white glue to hold position, and then I glued some scratch styrene to fill gaps at critical positions (with real glue)

DSC01814.jpg

Intake was stretched with sprue ...

DSC01820.jpg

Familiar with this one?

DSC01821.jpg

Port intake had even more bad luck ...

DSC01823.jpg

DSC01824.jpg

What happened? While glueing parts in 1st lower cut (fuselage cut), port side was misplaced - front part went down ...

Next post, please ...

To resolve this, I sanded inner side of back intake part (part closer to engine)...

DSC01826.jpg

I also primed Aires cockpit again, but I couldn't resist, so I primed upper wing sides. Some smaller errors were filled and sanded here ...

DSC01862.jpg

DSC01863.jpg

Aires port and starboard sides were copied onto Academy's inner cockpit side, as said earlier ...

DSC01842.jpg

DSC01839.jpg

DSC01848.jpg

Frame around Academy cockpit was restored and gaps behind the seat were filled with styrene ...

DSC01851.jpg

DSC01856.jpg

Another prove that I messed up 1st lower cut ... Port side main wheelbay frame needed to be restored with a milimeter of putty ...

DSC01858.jpg

.. but for starboard side no filler was needed ...

DSC01859.jpg

More pics to come in a day-or-two ...

;) Noooiiiceee, T-bloke!

Where the bloody Hectors have ya been, mate...? Mum's been askin' me 'bout yer project a huge lot, y'know. She's here again, cookin' some Goulash 'n' Spetsnaz for us to eat tonight. Aw, yer Flanker is goin' awesome! Me likes! Very noice work, T-mate.

Well... You know exactly to whom would I gave a treatment in the moment of speaking... Erg... writing ... Teaser! OK, not this kind of treatment, but xou get the picture ...

Yeh, me guesses who... ;) Too bad the lil' teaser in question is into a very different sort of modelling. Were it for me, the kind of treatment she would receive is electro-shocks :P Oh, but sometimes me really misses the sheila. Me gets the picture, huh...?

And yes, that Academy Flanker will have a similar building process, but it will have 2 major differences ... But that's a future story ...

Aw, ya talk 'bout teasin,' bloke! WHUT TWO MAJOR DIFFERENCES...???!!! (please?). Me's dyin' for anticipation, mate.

Whut happened?

Oh? Nice to see ya're finally catchin' the jargon! At first glance, mum explains whut possibly happened to yer intake; here:

DSC01813.jpg

It had certainly escaped my wits when I first saw that cut, but mum, y'know; she's right. She uses to see a lot at first sight. Awlright, Spetsnaz are gettin' a tad restless inside the pot, so me's got to go now, mate. Hope to see more of yer project, if possible in this century, ya hear? Mum says "Hiya, bloke! Whazzup?" (Lil' teaser ain't here, sorry).

Cheers, my mate!

You and your mom should start with an Academy Flanker ASAP and go back to page 1, post no.13, pictures 1 & 2 ...

Outer section of 1st lower cut was cut in parallel with main wheelbay frame, while inner section was cut straight ... As said, port side dropped, that's it ...

As for intakes, I cut both inner and outer side of intake at the same moment, but with no sufficient control of both sides, so that was askew ... Man, I had to look for that word in a dictionary ... <_<

Oh.. I almost forgot ... There's 100 answers on poll question ... Currently it's 38-63 against cutting Flanker....

I don't need to say what option did I choose... I hope there will be more votes as this build progresses ...

Erg... Check the dates - only 10 days passed from last update ...

Heh! Only ten days ya say, T-bloke? This reminds me of that ancient mariner's tale who dips his mate into the water for too long 'til the poor bastard finally drowns; the seaman fishes his dead mate outa the water 'n' sails back to port. When the port authorities asked whut happened, the sailor went, "Nuthin' happened; it's just the bosun told me he was able to hold his breath for longer than two minutes, y'know..."

Incidentally, lil' teaser's loved that tale ever since the day I first tried to see how long she was able to hold her breath under the water... But no-one beats mum on that, me guesses.

You and your mom should start with an Academy Flanker ASAP and go back to page 1, post no.13, pictures 1 & 2 ...

:doh:Oh...? Mum's already bought me the JLC (aka UMM) saw for that purpose, y'know. Me's orderin' Quickboost's correction nose tomorrow. Nay Aires cockpit, sorray. Yet, both mum 'n' her son are still waitin' for sumthin' else... Any idea whut that might be?

Besides, I enquired the Aeronautical Engineer whether she was real sure regardin' her veredict; all the more so after I presented this photo here to her as hard evidence:

IMG_8169_2.jpg

On the left, ya can hardly see a single hint of the consequences of such an askew cut, made so slantwise. I just exposed my case before the AE 'n' went back to my corner. Ya see...?? Also, on the right; does the unscathed Flanker have the Academy nose or is it the L&M resin one?

Go fetch yer Thesaurus, bloke! :P On a side note; when I was five years old, I thought my mum referred to some mad scientist by that word.

Outer section of 1st lower cut was cut in parallel with main wheelbay frame, while inner section was cut straight ... As said, port side dropped, that's it ...

Yeh, I noticed the reason why ya'd made that first lower cut since day one; it's just the main wheelbay runs in a diagonal angle with respect of the airplane's longitudinal axis, yes? yes? yes? yeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss...??? Mum was dealin' with the Spetsnaz in the kitchen 'n' that's why she didn't notice why ya had made the cut that way.

As for intakes, I cut both inner and outer side of intake at the same moment, but with no sufficient control of both sides, so that was askew ...

Askew. ;) Wonder whether or nay the lil' teaser would know the meanin' of that word. Gonna have to call her on the phone now... *sigh*

Man, I had to look for that word in a dictionary ...

Hmph... ya must excuse the mum 'n' her vocabulary; ya see, she was born in Bomber County. Val was born in Dubai, the Emirates; me was born in Geelong, Aussieland 'n' the lil' teaser was the only one who rejoiced in the bliss of havin' been born in San Isidro, Argieland.

Oh, she just said "hi." Told the critter ya were an admirer from Croatia, even when I HIGHLY doubt she would know where that country is; poor thing.

Ya keep it comin,' mate! Two more votes went to "YEA;" have ya seen...?

Cheers, and chillax.
