snickers
Hi, Working on a 1/144 MH-60L by Dragon and I am inquiring about the painting of the helicopter. It says on the instruction that it is overall flat black. I keep watching my dvd "Black Hawk Down" (making it my reference) and there was a part in the movie when they pass the boy, it is visible olive drab. I also look online for MH-60L walkaround and the author noted it is really overall flat black! Here is a doorless cockpit: Doors were cut, cockpit floors are trimmed to fit and level. HeavyArty
All US Army Special Operations MH-60L helicopters are flat black. They do fade to a dark, chalky grey pretty quickly though. The best representation is to paint flat black then drybrush with a dark grey and weather accordingly.
snickers
Flat black. How about the stencils/markings?
strikeeagle801
Stencils/markings are Olive Drab. Aaron As you can see...There are *many* variations to flat black. The pilot that I talked to said that it would not be accurate without the touch-ups! I've seen this more on the JBLM-based birds then elsewhere...Probably the close proximity to the Puget Sound and the salt water it brings. Aaron
snickers
The "US ARMY" looks light grey or tan to me but thats actually OD? At least I got the answers. Thanks guys!
HeavyArty
All markings, what little there are, are in OD Green. You can se the UNITED STATES ARMY on the tailboom of the helo below. And in this profile drawing. Werner's Wings does an excellent Nightstalkers, 160th SOAR (Special Ops Aviation Regiment) decal sheet that includes these as well. Unfortunately, the smallest he does is 1/72, not 1/144 scale. At that scale, you probably wouldn't be able to see any OD decals.
HeavyArty
Looks like I need to post faster next time. Good pic though.
snickers
Thanks heavy. Yeah the decals on the dragon kit looks light yellowish or almost white (i guess the decal sheet makes me color blind). But I guess its not obvious for this scale anyway.
Cobrahistorian
I just posted pics of Super 68 up close and personal if you need more references. No doubt, OD markings over vetting shades of flat and semi-gloss black.

rotorwash
-please Cobrahistorian. Thank you here's a closeup of the markings on Super 68. I was using a flash so the black looks a bit more washed out. I'm heading down to Rucker this Friday, and I plan to get some more natural light shots. I'll post them when I return. snickers
I see. I guess Dragon printed it right in this scale. It looks OD I think. Here's the decal that came with the kit: Some decals are cut and shared it to a friend. -- I guess I'm OK now. -- one last thing, need reference about gunner seat (ceiling) attachments. Are they facing rearwards just like in the movie Black Hawk Down? Edited April 23, 2014 by snickers
Cobrahistorian
Snickers, There are no gunner's seats in Super 68. Since she's a DAP (Direct Action Pentrator = gunship), the miniguns are fixed in the forward firing position. That whole section of the cabin is filled with ammo cans. Thanks for the help C.H.. But I'm just going for MH-60L only. I might do a Kilo soon and these photos will be useful for my future build.
Sarathi S.
Kilos aren't DAPs. All DAPs are L-model MH-60s.
snickers
Yes sarathi I'm aware that the DAP is a pure gunship. Though a slim posibility for me to build a DAP in this scale.
Sarathi S.
My point was that MH-60Ls are both transports and gunships (DAPs) whereas MH-60Ks are exclusively transports.
snickers
Got your point Sarathi but Im only talking about the transport and painting here. C.H has already stated and I am aware the a DAP is a gunship Lima. Thank you though. It will require more skills If I will build a DAP in this scale. snickers
Did Super 68 really participated in Mogadishu raid Edited April 25, 2014 by snickers
Cobrahistorian
Did Super 68 really participated in Mogadishu raid Yes.
rotorwash
I came back down to Rucker today and took a few more shots of Super 68. I took these without flash so the colors should be very close. HTH Ray
snickers
Lastly, any MH-60L serial number from 90s?
