Matchbox's old M16: done!

Recommended Posts

One thing I like about modelling as a hobby is that it always gives me a chance to try something new. In this case, that’s building armour! I’m not really an armour builder by “trade”, but I do find tanks and fighting vehicles very interesting.

I have been scared off by the complexity of armour kits in general, but then I found some old 1/76 Matchbox kits! With their small size and cool diorama bases, I figured I could get some practice on weathering and doing groundwork, all at the same time!

So, here’s what is actually my second piece of armour in recent times, the old M16 “meat chopper” from Matchbox.

Please let me know what you think, and I’d really appreciate feedback since I’m new at this and would love to hear how to get better!

Thanks!

The dust effect of your weathering is nice. Over all color looks a little too brown to me but if you wanted it that way it's fine. One thing I do on armor is try to differentiate accessories by painting them a different shade or color, like the bucket on the left rear and the gas can on the right front. I'd paint them a different color or tint of the base color and also paint the straps a still different color. A dark pin wash around the wheel's detail and the hitch and other likely spots would make it look more complex and less uniform. Over all, a good job on a soft detail kit. I have it in the stash and know what you started out with.

Thanks, both for the compliments and for the ideas.

Hopefully, I'll be able to implement some of them on the next tank I do! I'm still getting a feel for this whole 'layered' approach to doing weathering; it's not something I do normally.

The kit is a bit soft, that's true, but I'm still amazed how good it is compared to a Matchbox airplane!
