  1. Thanks folks. I appreciate the great comments! Russ
  2. "Rüdenberg's Pfalz DIII" oil on linen 19" x 11.5" This is a portrait of the Pfalz DIII flown by Vfw Friedrich Rüdenberg of Jasta 10. Russ
  3. Well, this one is finished. Into the War Zone oil on linen, 16" x 26" (it doesn't have an owner yet) The Halberstadt CLII was originally designed in mid 1916 as a two-seat escort fighter. Built in considerable numbers, the CL.II first began to see service on the front lines in the summer of 1917. Although it was designed as a two-seat fighter to escort reconnaissance and photographic aircraft., Idflieg had by this time come to appreciate the importance of close-support aircraft operating with infantry attacks and the duties were accordingly varied. With its distinctive communal cockpit fa
  4. Thanks guys for your compliments. Col., no special prcess for masonite. Just softer brushes. The finished version will be oil on linen. Russ
  5. "Rüdenberg's Pfalz DIII" 6.75" x 11" oil on masonite fresh off the easel - paint is still VERY wet. Russ
  6. Thanks folks, for your compliments MajorTomski, someone in another actually made a similar comment. If you take into consideration that those struts had to hold the aircraft together when the pilot entered a turn, I have a feeling that the weight of a man pulling back on one wouldn't overstress it. Those old birds were stronger than many people think. Just my opinion, though. russ
  7. I finally got around to tackling the color study for a composition that I've been working on for a while now. This one features a 32Sq DH2 at Vert Galand. There are a few minor details that need to be adjusted before I go full scale with this one - particularly to the uniforms. I may tweak a couple of the figures a little more as well. However, this is generally what it will look like. With all of the detail in this one, I knew that there would be several potential pitfalls and trouble spots throughout the composition. i took my time on this study, though, and I think I've gotten all of the
  8. Thanks, Stephen. You will. I have to let the base coat dry on the canvas before I can go back in and refine the painting. give me a 2 or 3 weeks and I'll post the finished image. russ
  9. Hey, glad to see this forum back on its feet again. I haven't visited in a while. Just finished 2 new color studies for a painting featuring a Halberstadt CLII. Thats right. 2 of 'em. I painted one and then decided it wasn't quite what I had in mind, so I painted the scene again. The difference isn't huge, but it is evident. The second is the model for the finished painting, which I began blocking in this weekend. I had originally planned to avoid using the Schlasta 26b markings, as they tend to get used a lot. I finally realized, though, that those markings would work really well with the
  10. Thanks, stephen. always good to get compliments from a fellow artist. Russ
  11. another. that dashingly handsome fellow up front holding the broken Axial propeller blade is actually a self portrait.
  12. More details. Pardon the streaking. My new scanner is so darn good it picks up the texture of the brushed on surface primer under the oils.
  13. For some of you today is already April 22, but for many others, including myself, today is still April 21 - the 88th anniversary of the death of Manfred von Richthofen. In commemoration I am very proud to announce that my Richthofen crash scene, entitled "Feeding On The Legend", is now finished, scanned and available for viewing. If you would like more details about the image you can visit my site: http://www.russellsmithart.com/Small%20pag...OnTheLegend.htm Cheers Russell
