Clinton H. Groves has died

Recommended Posts

Clint Groves, founder of ATP, has died. For the younger folks out there who may not know the ATP or Clint's name, Clint essentially founded the model airline hobby as we know it today. In the early 1970s he started selling airliner slides (ATP means Airline Transport Photography), and not long afterward he started designing and producing aftermarket decals for the then-available airliner models. To that point in history, the idea of aftermarket airliner decals was essentially unknown. Clint pioneered many aspects of our hobby. He was a true gentleman, and an honest broker in every way. His human foibles made him all the more lovable. Although he's been retired for some time, he's never been very far from the hobby. Clint was my inspiration when I started Liveries Unlimited in 1993, and I owe him a lot. We *all* owe him a huge debt of gratitude.

Clint, you will be missed, my friend!

RIP

Sorry to hear. I met Clint in the late 80s/early 90s as a teenager when I discovered through reading FSM, and seeing his advert, that he was about 5 miles from where I lived.

He was kind enough to show me his home, I remember meeting his mom, his cats, and his HUGE collection of built up kits, and the slide room that he had upstairs, as well as his process for duplicating slides. His Garage was awe inspiring for the number of kits, and he showed me some of his vac patterns, vac machine, etc.

Very nice guy, it was obvious as a teenager I had little money to spend, but he spent a considerable amount of time with me showing me everything, had lots of interesting stories. I visited him a few times before he moved out of San Jose.

RIP Clint!

Charlie
