Dragon UH-1D Reissue...

Recommended Posts

Alas. If we could get a ACCURATE D/H Huey......... :deadhorse1:/>

If you really want a new tool D/H, it's actually pretty easy.

Purchase the Dragon kit. Purchase a bunch of Cobra resin. Sand off all the battleship sized rivets and replace with Archer decals. Fill all the gaping panel lines and rescribe. Toss all the crude details and scratchbuild replacements, including pretty much a full interior. Keep us all posted with pics of your progress. As soon as you are 95% done with your masterpiece (should only take a year or two), someone will promptly announce a new tool, state of the art, super-accurate UH-1D/H.

You in???

Well, as we all know, the Dragon kit is a total crap, innacurate in angles, fuselage detail and other pieces... For this, i rather stay with the 48th versión and dont worry about those details, specially the locomitive and ship riveting.

But, as John said, if you are very fanatic of the long body Huey as i am, you could make a good representation of the real deal by adding some good scratchbuilt and aftermarkets.

What i would do is the following:

1-Sand all rivets and fill the panel lines, add archer rivets(according to scale)to the whole fuselage, and rescribe the panels as they SHOULD BE.

2-Get a UH-1C Academy/MRC kit, steal the seats, collectives, cyclics, upper console, middle console, instrument panel, skids(they need to be modified), roof antennas, main rotor mast with the linkages and stabilizer bar, (except the 540 rotor system and blades, they are not compatible with the D/H model), get the tail rotor, the fm antenna mount for the vertical fin, get the tail skid, get the half circle end boom antennas.

3-Make bigger the Green house roof Windows, as the kit ones are too small(try to copy the ones in the UH-1C model, they have the correct shape and size)

4- Get the Eduard UH-1C Big Ed PE set and detail all parts you grab from the C model that are the same for the UH-1D/H.

5- For a modern H or V model, get the Fireball Modelworks Excellent UH-1H ASE resin set that comes with all the bits for this versions.

6- What other thing could we add??? Anybody??

Cant wait to see your Huey.

Greetings.

Rod.

Still baffles me that a new-tool UH-1H/D hasn't been released yet. It would be a huge seller, I for one would pay any price, repeatedly, for an accurate new tooled kit as I'm sure plenty others would. We have talked about for years now, surely at least one manufacturer has it in their sights???

Unfortunately, when this uber accurate UH-1D/H in 1/35 does come out it will probably cost about $100. The newest nice 1/72 kits are $25-$30.

A bargain for anything in the "chosen" scale. Honestly, if I put a price tag on all the extra stuff I used for my Dragon Huey kit (Fireball decals, PE, Cobra resin), I was north of $100 and I still wasn't happy with the way my kit came out.

I just don't have the eyes or skill to run with 1/72.

To that I'd add that you'll have to scratchbuild the wire strike kit (blades and guards around the windshield wipers) if you are modeling a post-Vietnam Huey. Also for a late model Huey, you'll need the upgrade engine inlet filter (I think Fireball has this one but it's for the Revell Huey so I'm not sure how well it would fit, see below).

With regard to the Fireball ASE set, I thought that was designed for the 1/32 Revell kit? I've seen it used on the Dragon Huey and to my eye, the RWR fittings just look a bit too large. I would scratch build them.

The Dragon kit only has one M23 MG mount so you'll need to purchase the Cobra set (nice stuff) or the Dragon Vietnam Helo crew set for the second. Hoping Live Resin offers this in the future. The Cobra set is nice but LR's stuff is truly state of the art.

I used the Cobra "sugar scoop" on my Huey. Had a few fit issues on it, so if anyone knows if the Fireball sugar scoop fits nicely with the Dragon kit, please advise.

One day I may actually take a shot at a project like this but I need to finish my ongoing builds first before I can summon the courage for something of this magnitude.

Hi John,

Oh yeah, i forgot the wire strike blades, the ones that comes with the kit are horrible, but the Fireball ASE has the wire strike blades, i have them and they are beautifully shaped and it comes with an extra upper blade with the gps mount. I have tested the Fireball ASE with the Dragon Huey, let me tell you that as you say, the pieces are intended to use in the Revell one, the majority of the pieces fit well, but some not, like the sugar scoop exhaust that needs to be modified , so as the exhaust cowling of the model itself(it is too thick), you have to modify too the sugar scoop support that does not let it sit straight. Other pieces as the oil cooler exit shield, the hell hole cover and the cargo hook fits perfectly well( for the hook you have to open the hole in the belly as the real aircraft has it), the heat supression side shields needs to be modified, they are a bit too large for the Dragon kit, but for the revell one they are perfect. Other aspects to mention are the windshield side framings holders that are part of the wire strike kit, they need to be scratchbuild, so as the belly landing and taxi lights, the Dragon kit comes with a nose down light that is horribly wrong, for this, the UH-1C kit comes with the correct lights and you only need to drill the two holes and add the C model lights.

Oh and i forget to tell that the Dragon UH-1D Army version has the main rotor blades of the 212 model type, they need to be reduced in chord, i think the other version, the UH-1H HEER kit has the correct blades??

Did i forget other things??

Greetings.

Rod.

That is exactly what happened with the 1966 Batmobile. I bought a Revell Lincoln Futura, and a bunch of resin parts, started chopping at it, a few years later mid process, Polar Lights releases a 1/25 kit of it. Now I got a scrapped useless Futura!

Slightly off-topic but does Eduard do a pre-painted photo-etch IP for the Academy UH-1C? I have the non painted version but don't know if my skills will match up to my expectation in actually painting it. The Dragon photo-etch IP although pre-painted is far too long/out of scale.

Not to my knowledge. If anyone does know of a pre-painted IP for the Academy/MRC Uh-1C I'd sure like to know about it. From what I can tell, I think the Dragon panel is for a 212/UH-1N.

The only one I'm aware of that is pre-painted and looks quite good (from the pics) is the CMK UH-1D interior upgrade set. The rest of the parts look a bit inaccurate but the IP looks the goods. I may have to track one down.

  • 2 weeks later...

Any chance there's a specific kit number? I have tried for at least a year to get a replacement detail set for my German version with no luck. Would be willing to get it from this reissue-better than nothing. Thanks!

Bad news, Brother! Dragon reissued the UH-1N as the Anafa (3543) and STRIPPED-OUT the goodies (PE, etc.)! I ended up scrounging for the Dragon #3540 and found one - now I will turn THAT one into the Israeli Anafa.

The 3540's are available in the Great White North - good price $42 & change - but steep shipping! $20 in Canada, $28 to US. So it's a $70 purchase.

Wasn't there somebody not long ago, working on a bunch of PE for the long bodied Huey' s?

Tim

I never heard of this, I'd be interested in find out more info. Far as I knew, the only aftermarket stuff out there for the Huey was from Cobra.
