New Il-62 Decals

Recommended Posts

At least temporarily! I just can't let the opportunity go by to do some decals (the way I want them done) for the wonderful new Zvezda Il-62M. So at least for now, Liveries Unlimited decals are making their first appearance since 2002. I'm working on several decals for the Il-62 (as previously shown with profiles), but here are the first two actual decals. Stand by for cost, availability date, and ordering info.

LOT 1978 scheme. This sheet features all of the portraits of famous Poles that were applied to airplanes in this scheme over several years. It includes details for both the Il-62 (NK-8 powered) and Il-62M fleet that received these colors. As you'd expect from Liveries Unlimited, they're extensively researched and have a wealth of accurate detail. They are designed specifically to fit the Zvezda kit, and they do, very precisely. Our window sheet includes accurately shaped and sized windscreen panels, and a first for us - an oversized, double printed white decal that will allow you to 'rough-in' the masking around these tiny windscreen panels, then use the opaque white decal with the exact shapes of the windows to finish the job.

The Interflug sheet, like the LOT sheet, features markings for both early and late Il-62s and Il-62Ms. The differences were subtle, but, again, extensive research bears out the differences. The Zvezda kit has inaccurately sized and shaped doors and hatches, but our sheets have accurate outlines to correct this crucial detail for you. You have the option of properly placed doors and hatches with a length of cheat line already incorporated, or traditional separate outlines. As above, the windscreen decal will make a tough job much easier. Our cabin windows are based on measurements and a full size tracing of an actual Il-62 cabin window, and the window spacing is based on documentation from the Ilyushin Design Bureau! It doesn't come any more accurate than that. You'll have the option of using decal for the large red areas of the tail, or painting the red and using decals for the white logo. We've also included markings for these aircraft when three of them formerly operated by the East German government as VIP airplanes were taken over (briefly) by the Federal German Luftwaffe. Military Il-62s are pretty rare!

There are several more coming. Working on the Il-62M 1972 delivery scheme, and there will be a large all-encompassing Aeroflot sheet with *many* variations of the basic 1973 Aeroflot scheme. Also working on CSA and some others.

Here's the Tarom sheet. You will be able to build two complete models from the sheet - one each in the delivery colors and the later 1980s colors. Materials for NK-8 powered Il-62s as well as Il-62Ms are included, including the details specific to each individual airplane (there were subtle differences in all of them!).

Here's the Aeroflot Il-62M prototype and early delivery scheme. We have included markings for all six aircraft that carried this attractive scheme, including the many detail differences between them. The registration numbers are the correct style, based on detailed close-up photos in my collection. There were four different treatments of the striping at the front, and the sheet caters to all three types, including with and without clear windscreen panels for each variant.

Here's the final version of Aeroflot. I think I've covered just about every variation of the "standard" 1973 Aeroflot blue cheat line scheme. I even found several I wasn't aware of in researching this one. You'll be able to do at least two aircraft off the sheet (one very early version with the wider stripes and small titles, and one of the many variations of the later standard scheme. Of course you'll get enough letters and numbers to do any Il-62 that carried this scheme. We're also throwing in some really interesting markings for the VIP birds after they got their "Air Force Oneski" type markings in around 1990. With the gold "Sovietski Soyuz" titles, and the coat of arms of the USSR on the left side (really, really tiny in this scale!). This one will require a little 'modeling skill' to add the big canoe that housed secure comms equipment, but nothing too mind-bending if you use the drawings provided. After the fall of Interflug, their airplanes made their way eastward, and at least one ended up in what looked for all the world like an Aeroflot arctic division scheme! By combining the titles, flag, and registration from this sheet with the trim from the Interflug sheet, you can build this interesting airplane. We're covering many subtle variations on the basic blue, white, and light grey Aeroflot scheme as well. If you see anything we've missed, please speak now!

And here are a couple more! CSA includes markings for Il-62s (NK-8) and Il-62Ms (D-30) with the subtle variations in the livery from the first delivery in 1969 through the end of their service in this classic livery.

And from the Hermit Kingdom (aka the other side of the looking glass...), enough markings to do any CAAK/Air Koryo Il-62M (with the exception of the very first livery seen only on 885). I've never found a photo of P-889 (which crashed in July 1983), but I threw in a "9" just in case you have. I'd love to do the pudgy boy's current ride, but I only have four photos of her, and none clear enough to do the extremely complex style of lettering it carries. If someone comes up with better photos of this mysterious airplane I'd be inclined to do a supplement sheet with the markings. As far as I can tell it carries no sort of registration or serial number whatsoever. Meantime, enjoy the classic CAAK/Air Koryo scheme in all its wild and wonderful variations.

This is quite big (3721 x 2281) but perhaps, as you said, not clear enough!?

The inscription should read (with the characters a bit stylized):

Democratic People's Republic of Korea

조선민주주의인민공화국

...but I am very tired and maybe I just want things to fall in place and... :)

Please check!

Wow!! Where did you find that photo? It's far better than any that I have found so far. If it were taken more directly from the side it would be perfect.

The typeface for the Korean lettering is a problem.

Yeah, I found that one yesterday. That may be the ugliest Hangul typeface I've ever seen :)/>

That dude is well and truly a whack job.
