Zinc Chromate Yellow

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know where I might find a bottle or two of the color Zinc Chromate Yellow? I'm painting the Dragon 1/72 Saturn V and I need that color but I cannot find it anywhere. I've found plenty of Zinc Chromate Green, but not yellow. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

MisterKit makes, or used to make, a pretty decent match, though I think it's a little washed out. I remember making zinc chromate paint back in high school (yes, that long ago), and it was a very intense, saturated yellow in pure form. The zinc chromate colors you see in use resulted from mixing the pure zinc chromate paint with varying amounts of white (less intense yellow) or black (which resulted in green.) That's one of the reason's there are so many zinc chromate greens of different color. The original "spec" was a 1:1 mixture, but that varied considerably with the supply of zinc chromate (which was expensive both in terms of raw materials and manufacture). Chromium ores are not plentiful in the Western Hemisphere, and difficult to extract when they are found. Chrome for alloy use had a much higher priority than chrome for pigment.

Your best bet might be to find a good color reference and match it, rather than looking for exactly the right color from a manufacturer.

Hey Paul,

Testors makes YZC in enamel. I've read that they make it in acrylic, but I use enamels so I couldn't speak to an acrylic's availability. I have found it at Michael's craft stores. It's sold in the old Testors' little square bottles.

Hopefully that helps a little. Good luck!

Testors. Square bottle. Sold everywhere.

Also in MM Acryl.

Just an FYI- the Testors enamel ZCY that's being produced now is slightly more green than it used to be, but still usable I think. I noticed the change around 2 years ago when I bought some fresh bottles at my LHS. I still have a bottle of the old ZCY, and it is definitely a bit different (more yellow) than the newer one.

You're gonna need more than a couple of bottles - that's a huge kit!

I particularly like the Testors square bottle version. Xf-4 is also very reasonable to my eye as well. Once you start weathering and modulating...like you should...you really just need a close approximation. Of course if your hobby is more obsessing over inane minutiae than building models this may not be the case.
