Tamiya 1/350 U.S.S. New Jersey

Recommended Posts

It's been quite some time since I posted a build thread and it's about time I did. There's not a lot of ship building done on this site (Air Resource Center, go figure ;)/>/>/>) but I figure it can't hurt to dabble in other topics.

I've had the New Jersey for about 2.5 years now, waiting to be built. In that time I had picked up Eduards photoetch set for it, replacement turned brass barrels from B&D Barrels as well as Pontos Models scale wood deck. Pontos has released a full upgrade set since, which probably includes even more than what I've already purchased, sadly. Good thing I have the Missouri in the stash as well!

So, while the wife was out at the local amusement park, I sat down and finally got back into the swing of things. Since buying a house and moving in last April, I never really set up a "man cave/work bench. So, what better place than our dining room, since it is flooded with light all day?! I started work on the turrets, figuring this would be a simple, easy start. 5 hours later, I have one "mostly" done. Not three, one. I've never worked with PE this tiny and I really think I've going cross eyed while working on it! 33 and the eyes are toast! :)/>/>/>

To start, I began removing the ladders from the turret #2

_DSC4117.jpg

I smoothed out the areas where the ladders had been, then began bending up the PE. TINY!

After that, attachment began.

20130728_163736.jpg

I started next on the barrels....well, one so far. I removed the plastic barrel and drilled out the blast bag to accept the new brass barrel.

_DSC4120.jpg

And here's where we ended for the day. I will be working on improving the seal between the blast bag and barrel, since it should be flush and now gap. That's for the next work session.

_DSC4122.jpg

One question, if anyone knows. Eduard provides rails that go around the top of the turret, but I can't find any picture of the real thing with these rails. Are they fictitious?

This is going to be a long term build, as there is so much PE for this ship. I'm just glad I finally started it! Though, I might have to build a F-4 or my Eurofighter as a distraction!

Feel free to comment, critique, say hi, whatever.

Thanks

Brett M

Great start Brett, I love a good ship WIP, why not move this over to the WIP thread with the rest of us closet ship guys.

Bill

Thanks Bill. You'll have to point me at that thread, I'm not seeing where it's at......

Nice start! The PE stuff is definitely worth the effort!

I have this kit in my stash along with the Enterprise and have envisions of building this one day. I had built it years ago when I was a teenager but didn't do a good job. This time round, I have the Eduard PE set and will be picking up the brass barrels and wooden decking to enhance it somewhat.

I will be following your build with interest!

Hi Brett,

Altough this tread is some months old, I surely like to know if the build of this kit has gone forward.

I have the same kit, altough without the PE sets (almost not found here in Belgium) and have a question. What is the grey color of the ships hull?

Preferably by Humbrol color numbers or mixes.

Thanks

Peter

Such a long term build.....I finally pulled it out of storage and actually made some progress. The three main turrets are assembled, a bit of clean up to do on the blast bags (no pics). I started at the top of the superstructure and have been working my way down. A few pics of new progress and PE assembly. I managed, so far, to only lose 1 piece of PE, the smallest piece that I had attached and then knocked off days later. Gone to the carpet monster!

Hopefully a little more often with updates now. I want it built since I've had the kit 4 years now :)

Really nice work- cheers!

:jaw-dropping:/> :jaw-dropping:/> That is some build.....

Thanks guys!

Here's where I'm at as of today. I haven't finished the funnel, as I've removing part of the railings, so that's not on yet. Painted all the parts here, painted the deck, railings etc. Trying to figure out how I could add the viewing slits on the front of the tower, sometime today.

I'm glad that these pictures are much bigger than the actual parts. They don't hold up as well on the detail parts!

Here's my most recent updates, which aren't as much as I'd like to have accomplished. However, with winter having skipped Utah this year and 65 degree weekends, I've been outside a lot with the dogs and doing yard work!

Back to the ship though...

Working on more and more rails before I begin to attach details.....you can see broken rails, which have since been repaired

PSX_20150216_172746.jpg

Repaired.....I'll fill the gap between the rail and post as well

PSX_20150216_182843.jpg

High tech hold downs while gluing the rail

PSX_20150216_212724.jpg

Next might be Haze grey and deck painting, then to attach detail parts.....moving along, moving along.

Thanks everyone for any comments or suggestions!

Great work! I do the same thing, creating random holding apparatus while gluing rails on. What do you use to glue them down? I use watered down elmers, it dries flat. I usually wait for the rails until painting is done, I end up breaking less, lol.

Bill

Hey Bill

I've been using extra thin CA and thick, gap filling CA so far. For the extra thin, I have some tiny tiny nozzles I bought from Sprue Bros that, so far, have kept the flow down. No huge mess yet!

Hopefully I don't break them.....I did knock one part off of the conning tower when it tipped over. Thankfully it stayed on the table and not the floor!

Thanks again

Brett

Some more progress that I've made over the weekend. More details to add of course, but it's getting there. For those in the know, do the SBROC launchers look okay, or are they too bright?

One more, just did one of the CIWS stations. Do any of you know (I'm sure you do) if the horizontal service beneath the gun should have a dark grey/non-skid surface?

And that random grey mark on the white of radar dome is gone now....

A couple more from tonight. Added the stairs, platform and door from level 05 to 06 (I think that's right). I also attached the forward section of level 04 to what I've completed so far. A couple bits of PE attached there, paint to come next.

Some work done on turret 2 as well. Still need to paint the bare metal areas on the barrels, but that's for tomorrow.

More work from today. Ladder work, plus attached the painted funnel. Tomorrow's plan is to finish the second CIWS and the three gun directors (hopefully).

Touch up to do here and there, I don't like some of the deck grey and haze gravy lines, so I'll clean those up in places.

Please let me know if you see something that needs to be fixed or is inaccurate!

Thanks

Hey all. I didn't get near as much as I thought done today as I would. Mostly because this guy below needed a bath, then the bathroom needed a bath after him!

PSX_20150301_170152.jpg

One director assembled, looks pretty ugly without paint. I'm trying to round up something for the center of the dish as it looks odd right now.

PSX_20150301_165953.jpg

Otherwise, I played around with the Mk 38, moved it to be more centered on the mounts as Tom suggested. (and now with the picture so large, I see a seam I need to remove!)

PSX_20150301_170056.jpg

Also repainted the awning on the conning tower and gave it some slight weathering.

PSX_20150301_170911.jpg

Let me know what you think and if you see something that could be changed. Hope everyone had a good weekend modeling.

Still plugging along slowly on my New Jersey. Not much of an update, but a few new things added. Still need to build the other two directors and get them painted.

Small progress today, I hollowed out the "doors" Tamiya had moulded. Also, opened up where the ladders between decks would on level 3, 4 and 5 (not shown).

Still have lots of clean up as you can see, but it's taco time!

Feel free to tell me where I need to change anything I might have done wrong!

Thanks for looking.

Brett
