1/48 Italeri V-22 Osprey

Recommended Posts

Nah man. We ain't no gods. Just the guys who sometimes forget we're not in the barracks when we are speaking in public.

 , joy stealer....

I'm beginning to wonder if the CV-22s I saw at Edwards we're actual production birds or if they were birds used to intro the type to the USAF.

EDIT - I figured out that I must've looked at that USAF V-22 in 2005 or 2006. If that helps by adding a clue as to whether they were true MV-22s or not.

I don't think the CV are in full production. My guess it that it was a MV-22A's with AF equipment. I will ask around for you.

The MV out at Edwards in '05/'06 was most likely the A/C 89898, AKA the AF Additional Test Aircraft, or ATA. ATA originally was MV 25, but was brought out of mothballs and reconfigured to a Block A MV then augmented with the CV avionics gear.

The differences between AF and MC are:

Paint

Extra radios

different countermeasures system

different threat detection and neutralization system

Other small internal differences

Other than that, the only other difference in production birds is the CV has the aft right sponson tank that the Block A MV birds came with. When the switch to the Block B configuration came with MV 70, the MV birds lost the right aft sponson tank and gained the wing inboard aux tanks. The CV birds starting with CV 5(?) were augmented with the inboard wing aux tanks.

Seeing this thread reminded me that I've got one of these laying around as well, so I dug it out of the mountain of unfinished stuff and took a look...

I discovered the reason I had stalled on the build before was that I'd cut off the "dome" on the top of fuselage and started to fill it. I went looking for refs again and found that there's actually a structure here, but it's not dome shaped but more trapezoidal in appearance and flatter than the original bit, so my card-backed and filled hole will serve as a pretty good base for the new structure once I get around to messing with.

I'm missing the clear sprue for the kit, except for the canopy (phew!) so I'm hoping the Clearfix-and-toothpick method of window crafting will be up to the task... I'll probably find it after I've given up and thrown the rest of the kit out, though, that's my usual kind of luck.

Cheers,

SP

So I decided that I'm going to use CMK 1/48 Vietnam helicopter figures for a crew, only downside is that they are all in Vietnam gear. Granted I could easily give them a little modification, modern uniform paint job, but I would love to give the pilots some night vision head sets and the FE's the faceguard:

Does anybody know any company that sells figure accessories of this type or do I have to make it all from scratch?

GI,

Be advised that neither the Marines nor the Air Force uses the HGU-56 helmet that we do, and thusly don't have the MFS.

That's an anomaly. I've never seen a USAF crewman using a -56, the USAF uses the -55. As for MFS being restricted to gunners only, I know Kiowa drivers do wear them.

But for the sake of modelling I don't think I'll be getting THAT detailed. haha

Cobra, hate to bust your bubble, but the USAF uses ONLY the 56/p in the CV-22. And the Marines out at New River are authorized to wear them as well.

The 56/p is the ONLY helmet that meets the USAF helicopter crash / impact requirements and is the ONLY authorized helmet for use in helicopters with the USAF, Army and Coast Guard (except with the 160th who fly with a waiver from big green).

Looks like a pair of 56/P's to me...

Flight Engineer on a Pavehawk (note the PJ is wearing a HALO parachutist helmet, not a 55/P, similar but not the same)

I'm not just a helmet nerd, I work for Gentex.

Well hell... guess I learned something!

Being an Army type and knowing something about the procurement system, I unfortunately used LOGIC to come to my conclusion. I knew the Navy and AF use different helmets from us in general and knew I'd seen PJs with the gray/gray helmets. Then again, I wear an IHADSS, so what the heck do I know!

Thanks for the correct info!

No worries. The USAF is a different animal all together. Where the Army wears AirWarrior survival gear, the USAF wears a mish-mash of gear that is squadron authorized.

I mainly do pilot flight equipment & helmet integration with .mil platforms and you would be amazed at the variety of gear that the US military still issues.

Hey =GI=,

Take a look here: http://s198.photobucket.com/albums/aa228/a...ter2002/CV-22B/

Those are CV-22B pics that I took down at Scott AFB. They are exterior pictures b/c the inside was way to crowded to take pictures. And about those decals, those are pretty sweet, huh? I got one sitting in my basement along with the USCG C-130 decals from NATs. Too bad I don't have either kit...lol

Take care & good luck,

Austin

Still have those decals? Willing to part with them? <_<

Your Osprey is coming along nicely...also makes me want to do another. Then I recall all those pieces that go into the proprotors...Ugh!

BTW, don't forget to clean up the top of the elevator. The kit has a raised piece molded on the elevator which needs to be removed:
