rom
Hello, For my current b1b build, I plan to set a "little" diorama base. I will put a Tamiya humwee with some hasegawa crew member around the Lancer. I would like to paint my humwee in desert camo. Is possible considering the scene would take place around 1992 1993? Had the humvees wear desert camo on ConUS airforce base? and i the Gulf region? Thanks for the help Romain
Vince Maddux
I think desert camo will be OK, I remember going to Ft. Stewart before the first Gulf war and all the equipment I saw was already painted in sand. I'm willing to beat that Ft Stewart wasn't the only place like that.
rom
Great! thank you Vince! I think it is more interesting to add some over colors near the dark camouflaged Bone. Bye!
Rich in name only
In 92/93 USAF vehicles ststioned at CONUS bases would not have been camo, especially around B-1s----wouldn't have been Hummers either. Hummers would have been Army or USMC so you'd have to depict a visit (air show, emergency landing, ...) or maybe Dyess AFB, TX. Dyess had B-1s and C-130s at the time (I think still does). The ramp was continuous but normally vehicles would not cross from one area to the other (not really restricted so much as no need to). But things like fence/gate maintenance, other repairs, ... could have led to such a situation. On the other hand, forward deployed is mix and match.

Dyess started getting Hummers in 1986 when I was stationed there,in the BDU type camo, security(to supplement the Peacekeepers) and the maroon beret guys got them first. We had the B-1B's,KC-135A's,C-130H's,and a handful of T-38A's for the ACE program(B-52H's left in 1984).When I left in 1987 they had around 10-15 HUMVEE's in the motorpool and probably the same amount in various parts of the base, the half ton pick-ups and Broncos were still the most prevalent modes of transportation though

Vince Maddux
To be more correct you'll need a CUCV (Full size Chevy Blazer) and I don't think the B-1s had tail codes back then. So unless there was another way to tie the B-1 to Dyess , No one is going to know the difference. OH and the BDU camo on the Humvee it actually a standard NATO pattern of green, brown and black
AlanM
In my experience there are no humvees, or tactical vehicles of any sort on the AF flight line, and I've been on a lot of them. You still see the typical blue pickups(not necessarily AF blue), SUVs, white GSA vehicles sometimes and the typical white patrol cars as well as the maintenance vans. If the SF folks had humvees at all they would be limited to the perimeter or any place they would need an off road capability. Even when I was in the middle east, I never saw humvees on the flight line where I was at. The reason I think is they were to much of a gas guzzler to idle all day, and pretty uncomfortable, especially in summer.

Another reason not to see "off road" vehicles on the flightline is that their tires would likely leave a lot of FOD behind. DET1460
rom
Hello, thank you guys for all your comments. I found this pictures on the internet: No idea where the scene takes place..but we clearly see a camo painted Humwee. Regards, Romain
