Russia invades Ukraine!

...and no body cares.

Perfect timing by these guys. Wait until the U.S. and key allies are war beaten from "defeating" Al Queda, along with the uprising of ISIS...and roll on into a sovereign country at your whim because you know there's nothing they will do to stop you. I'm really surprised the Chinese haven't rolled on Taiwan yet. Good thing their economy is booming...

Plus football season starts in a few days... Putin could not have timed it better. The average American will not even notice what has happened until at least Week 6 or 7.

Go Pats!

I suspect this has been their game all along. Once they took back Crimea and their warm water port......it was only natural Russia would open up a land corridor to their warm water port.

But it is very strange they would do this invasion rather than build a bridge on the southern tip of Crimea by Kerch, Crimea and Taman, Russia. I guess Russia needs to look tough to give the rest of their territories a little lesson in intimidation.

The more troubling side to this is why did Russia need to take back Crimea when the Ukrainians were happy to lease that area to them on a long term lease? Either Russia enjoys intimidating their little poorly armed neighbours......or there is a bigger game and Russia needed to make Crimea part of Russia or perhaps Russia is too poor to afford the lease.

Building a bridge between Kerch, Crimea and Taman, Russia to supply the warm water fleet would be fine in peace time, but that bridge would be a prime target if there was a larger war. So does Russia have a bigger game in motion or are they just keen to get all their warm water port into more of a war stance (ie: in Russian territory and under Russian control) so they are always prepared for the worst.

I really don't see how Russia could gain from a large conflict if that is their game. They should be focused on selling their resources and making money that way...building their economy etc blah blah blah. The Western countries seem to understand oh-so-well the damage a large war does to an economy...hence tueir reluctance to go into Ukraine.

On top of that, it's not like it wouldn't be easy to close the Bosphorous and Dardenelles to all Russian shipping.

Quite true indeed.

The goofy part is that in 20 - 50 years....Russia will have plenty of options for warm water ports.

Good points.

Especially regarding Taiwan.

In addition to what you've stated, these kinds of events happen when the occupant of the White House and/or Congress is perceived to be weak by tyrants of the world.

It is rather amusing from a strategic point of view the level of grief Russia is getting from taking over the Crimea. Their economy has taken a hit and they are dithering around with Ukraine doing something that should have been a 1 or 2 week operation in 1939. Stalin must be rolling over in his grave at the way Putin has mucked this up.

Putin does have an ace in the hole. Winter is fast approaching and with Europe being heavily dependent on Russian energy, it will be interesting to see how aggressive our European allies will be in levying truly meaningful sanctions against Russia.

The ones that have been implemented to date obviously haven't had any real effect.

I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you.

I liked Canada's tweet yesterday about Russian soldiers who kept getting "lost" and entering into Ukraine.

This was amusing......it is hard to respect a military that has no clue where they are regarding borders.
