Academy P-36 Hawk

Recommended Posts

I was thinking of building a Dec-7 1941 Oahu P-36 but am wondering if the old Academy (HobbyCrap) kit at least has a good outline. I know their kits of that era are pretty lousy. The P-40 and Corsair series kits were quite off. The P-40 was fixable with some Monogram P-40 parts grafted onto it but the Corsair kits were WAY off. So, how is the P-36 kit? I know they also released a P-35 back than but have no idea about that kit at all. I sort gave up on them after the Corsair. I think that everyone else did too. Hence their demise.

I think the P-36 is a pretty good kit, but I'll be interested to hear what others more knowledgeable on the type have to say. I've got one just about at the painting stage and I really enjoyed the build.

Here's a (not very good) pic of a (not very good) Mohawk build I did back in the 90s. I understand there were some accuracy issues, but again, I enjoyed the build, which I guess is the important thing after all.mohawk.jpg

The only thing I could find on the WWW is that the cowling had the wrong outline from about mid cowl forward it was too pointed. I wonder how the AMT cowl is. The AMT kit has the cowling much more accurate.

I have both the AMT P-36 and HC/Academy kits in 1/48.

the AMT it is more like a toy than a model.

the HC kit is not up to Tamiya or Hasegawa standards , but is still decent if you take some time and some care.

(haven't gotten around to photos of my builds as they still need finishing touches)

a short search of the internet results in the following:

I wonder which would be better, try to re-shape the Academy/HC nose or to graft a AMT nose onto the kit. Any thoughts? I could also do a master and have Obscureco come out with a new resin nose for the kit if there was enough interest. I did one fro the Skyraider (intended for the Monogram kit) and cowls for the PV-1 for Obscureco so why not this.

It seems a little clarification is neded.

Hobbycraft makes one P-36A/C (what Otto wants) and three different Hawk-75 kits - H-75A1-A3, H-75A4/MohawkIV (the one that DonS built) and H-75M/N/O (the fixed u/c ones)

.

The first two have Twin Wasp engines and cowls, the cowl is ok in general, gun bulges are a bit off.

The last two are the Cyclone engined planes, and their cowls are definitely off.

IMO, a resin cowl for P-36A/C is a waste of money.

One of the best P-36/H-75 builds online can be found on the link below.
